Many car engines are between 4 and 5 litre oil capacity. If you have (or get) a Haynes manual for the donor car it'll tell you in there, as
well as the recommended oil spec.

Nick, not worth getting a manual just for the sump! I have been running 4.5L as that was to the dipstick high mark. But the dipstick came with the
block, not the sump. So it occurred to me I ought to check! Seems I was about right, but I will drain and refill with 4L and re-mark the dipstick.
Btw I don't trust haynes manuals at all for specs. Too many mistakes!

If the dipstick came with the block and is the right one for that block then the min/max markings are correct for that block regardless of what sump
is on there. Don't re-mark the dipstick. If 4.5L takes the oil surface to the max mark then the volume of oil that should be in there is 4.5L.

If the engine has been running fine with 4,5 l in there, that's probably the correct level
If the engine smokes a slot, then the level is to high
Thats was probably spelt wrong, or had some grammer, that the "grammer police have to have a moan at
