MOT required for Q registrations
iscmatt - 11/1/08 at 12:46 PM

In case its of interest to others, I have just queried with DVLA a requirement for an MOT when I next tax my MK which was SVAd last August. Apparently because it is a kit car built from donor parts its age can't be confirmed so an MOT is insisted on. If only I'd taxed it for 12 months at the time I could at least have put that day off

my car is on a Q sva'd 2 years ago, been taxing mine without MoT once on line the other at post office.

You could use this form

When you speak to dvla staff, half don't know the rules.
Try taxing your car online

They don't mention that on the V112
http://dvla.gov.uk/media/pdf/forms/v112.pdf

What date of manufacture is on the V5C? If it's the SVA date you should be fine in the post office no matter what the computer says you should/shouldn't need.

Qudos to Matt Claydon for that link.

Typical of the DVLA speak to 3 people get 4 different answers, don't ask them and follow their own forms/published information to the letter and they have little room to argue.

I taxed mine at the local DVLA office - the bloke at the counter went off and asked an inspector.

He said it was silly, and didn't ask for an MOT cert.

That's funny, I wrote to Swansea about my Q plate and they confirmed I didn't need an MOT for the first 3 years.....

I'd try filling in the form (including the one linked above) and send it off to the local DVLA place.

If they have the choice of ringing you up and quibbling it or ponnying up the tax disc they'll likely take the second option.... In my experience most problems at the DVLA office can be sorted by assuming they'll do whatever is easiest for them..... so you just need to make any "suboptimal" options difficult for them....

That guy at the DVLA was right, it is silly, particularly bearing in mind the car has been through a far more rigorous test within the last six months !

I haven't looked at the online retaxing yet as I was thinking of SORNing until April. I'll check it out though...and print off that form V112 - thanks all for your advice and reassurance

I should add that the inspector DID want to see a copy of the MAC though!

I wasn't going to argue, (a) because I wanted to stay in his good books, and (b) I had a copy with me. He said that if I hadn't had a copy with me then he could have looked it up on the DVLA computer, but that would have meant that my tax disc would have been sent on in the post the next day.

According to Jan 2008 Kitcar mag (no I didn't buy it) the regulations have changed so it may mean you will need an MOT before registration?
