8mm ID or OD
the_big_1 - 19/8/19 at 02:37 PM

Hi Guys,

when talking about 8mm fuel pipe for a 2.0L Zetec on standard injection, are we talking ID of pipe, so 8mm inside, 10 out etc or 8mm outside, 6mm inside etc.?

Bunje - 19/8/19 at 04:09 PM

i always thought it was the internal size of the pipe.

All sizes are O/D unless otherwise stated

Hose is bore, pipe/tubing is O/D.

There lies the confusion. Should it be 8mm inside or outside lol

I used 8mm O/D from tank to swirl pot in engine bay, the fuel rail connector (OEM) is
6mm!!
However 3 litre V6, 7200 rpm and 272bhp at 7200rpm, so it can't be wrong

Any idea what the ID was? 8mm OD pipe will be larger ID than 8mm hose?

8mm O/D pipe will be 6mm-ish bore,
Hose is sized by bore, so 8mm tubing needs 8mm hose.
R9 8mm hose will be about 13/14mm O/D.

Hi,

So as long as ID is 6mm or more, should be fine then?

It was on my 3litre Jag engine. All the original fuel piping on the engine was 8mm nylon.
You will find that Injection filters usually have 8mm connections.

Hi ya,

I did read that but like others, I wasnt sure that ment that the connection was OD 8mm for an ID 8mm pipe or hose etc lol
So I guess the ID of say the 8mm fuel filter will be a bore size of approx 6mm

Zetec ?

How are you joining the pipe to the rail ? The rail itself has 8mm or 5/16 ends but theY are not designed to take the pipe direct. If you have the Oem connectors they are an odd size. You can get aftermarket quick disconnect adapters but there usually to an an6 fitting.

Hi ya,

I haven't got that far yet. Will have to have a search online for the quick connector

I cut the nylon tubing from the OEM connector, it has barbs on the fitting, and pushed R9 hose in it's place.

Bunje - 20/8/19 at 07:02 AM

If its a chrome fitting, as in my photo, it's actually in 2 pieces.
The large part the hose pushes on is held by a circular spring that you have to release, I used
a roiled up piece of thin plastic. It,s a bit fiddly
If it,s plastic, can't help you.
With regard to hose, I used THIS
It's been on the car 8 years and still good.

My connector looks like THIS
Later fittings are like THIS
