Type 9, zetec fly wheel
Hi all
I'm having a few problems with my new starter motor ( not working anymore) I have just fitted a type 9 to a st 170 with 2.0 fly wheel and
I've used the lrs707 starter but after a run out the starter was whizzing even when the engine was turned off and then stopped working , so my
question is am I using the wrong fly wheel ( should it be the 1.8 with pinto clutch ) or am I using the wrong starter ??
Please help as this is stating to drive me nuts.
Cheers
Rob
No it's not new I've had it for ages!!!

the starter requires for the zetec is from a either th Dohc or CVH engined Sierra or 2 litre DOHC granada, a standard 1.6 or 2 litre starter requires
a 14 mm spacer
Life is like a bowl of fruit, funny how all the weird looking ones are left alone

So I would need to put a 14 mm spacer between the starter and the box ??

when you say it was wizzing after turn off maybe there is just a problem with the solenoid on the starter as there must have been power going to it
somehow

If the starter is spinning with the engine of then I would say you have a wiring fault.
How have you wired it ?

Just got hold of a 1.8 pinto starter and it fits without a spacer and works fine albeit a bit rough and noisy ?? Why does this fit and work ???

I thought there was only one way to wire it , small wire. ( ignition wire ) goes to the small thread and large battery wire goes to the large
thread ( if that all makes sense )
I drove it for a while say about 20 mins then stopped, all fine then went out 10 mins later and about 5 mins into the drive heard a noise stopped and
turned of ignition but it kept whizzing so took the neg of the battery and it stopped ??????

If it starts making the noise again it would be a good idea to pinpoint the problem, try disconnecting the feed wire from the ignition switch when
the problem occurs, if it stop the noise then problem may be with the ignition switch, wiring or if you have fitted one, the starter relay . If the
noise is still there and the only way to stop it is to disconnect the battery it sounds like the bendix is engaged with the flywheel ring gear and
needs further investigation

Could it have been a 1.8cvh in which case it would be fine?

assuming you are not getting a feed to the solenoid, it must be a faulty solenoid i have heard of bosch ones failing like this.

I'm sure all 1.8 petrol Sierras were CVHs.
