Fitting an Oil Cooler, Do i need an Oil Thermostat
A technical question for you clever people.
I am fitting an Oil cooler to a BMW M30 engine (Old E34 535i) I can get an adapter with take offs for a cooler, i just wondered if all engines running
an oil cooler also ran a thermostat. I know a lot of OEM cars run a stat within the cooler but an aftermarket cooler wont have that.
Thanks for any help and advice.
BTW, the reason i am fitting an oil cooler is i am turboing it. This will also help with a take off to feed the turbo.

Personally I'd run a thermostatic sandwich plate and take my oil feed from a tee with the oil pressure switch.

If its a road car a stat is advisable,as a cooler can over cool the oil
Obv if it's a track car etc that's going to be thrashed permanently you can do without a stat.

thanks, it will be a bit of both. Ive not seen a sandwich plate for it as bmw use a cartidge type filters so not sure i can get one with a built in
stat. I have heard of issues with cold oil not being able to circulate through a cooler and causing poor pressure when cold. does it work like
that?

thanks for that, thats what i used to run on my rotary stylus. I will probably go with something like that again. I just wondered if it was
possible not to

I would suggest that even a track only car may need a thermostat. It will help the oil warm up faster, essential to get it working correctly with no
downside.
And then there is the option to use a oil/water heat exchanger which is even better. It warms the oil quicker, and moderates oil temps nicely. Used in
many many modern cars, and for good reason. Downside is it puts a little extra strain on the water rad, and it needs plumbing into the cooling system,
but in reality a small price to pay. In fact, there may be a suitable one from a later car? worth a look...

of the time.

my 335i runs oil temps of 118 degress consistently on the motorway at any time of year which amazes me but this is how BMW designed it as it seem they
all do! As soon as you take one on track it goes over 125 and if they get too hot go into limp mode when it gets too hot! They have an oil cooler as
standard.
The stock E34 M5 has an oil cooler with 340 bhp so i figured as i want closer to 450 bhp i should invest in a cooler while i am rearranging the front
of the car to fit an intercooler and bigger rad.

Surely then they are just running a cooler that's too big?

Saw oil temps knocking on the door of 150 degrees C doing 15 minute sessions at Castle combe in my VRS with just the standard modine.
