Old cars you see lots of
Benzine - 6/8/10 at 09:17 AM

What daily driver old cars (say 15 or more years old) do you see on the road a lot still?

iSee lots of Volvo 740, 940, 960, 340, 240, 440, 850s, K11 micras, Daihatsu charades (specifically in Brighton)

o/t: Has anyone ever seen an old ford transit that's not had work done to it's wheel arches?

iank - 6/8/10 at 09:19 AM

Seeing more classic mini's on the roads in the last couple of years.

blakep82 - 6/8/10 at 09:21 AM

rsmith95uk - 6/8/10 at 09:36 AM

Seem to be lots of well maintained Audi 80's around here.

liam.mccaffrey - 6/8/10 at 09:50 AM

Early Mx5's, old 3 series, cavaliers

carpmart - 6/8/10 at 09:51 AM

e30 BMW's are pretty common!

mcerd1 - 6/8/10 at 10:08 AM

lots of old astra's & corsa's round my way - but then I live next door to vauxhall main dealer (a good dealer that looks after the old cars)

also loads of old pug 106, 205 & 306's for soem reason...

coozer - 6/8/10 at 10:17 AM

Tons of old Fords round here. Most pampered restores but I regular see a Mk1 Fiesta on an X plate being used as a daily commute.

There also seems to be a lot of steam engines from various times in the last 120 years that steam past here.

There's a haulage company in town that have more vintage trucks, cars and steam engines in stock than modern rolling stock!

Then there's the guy who runs the chip shop who uses the cash to keep his steam engine and vintage motorcycle rolling.

I know 9 blokes who drink in the club who run traction engines, bikes and cars, none of your classic stuff mind, proper vintage gear.

They'll all be at Pickering this weekend

Dunno, never heard him sing....

Triton - 6/8/10 at 10:49 AM

I quite often see herds of Austin 7's the odd Mk2 Escort but the beast that does it for me is the silver E type being driven by a bloke who looks like a 1940's spitfire pilot complete with mental face hair

Oh and I drive a 27yr old T25 camper cos new stuff is pants and bays and splits way tooooo common down here

Define old, I rarely see anything pre-90's here but then I am in Vauxhall city (where every bugger has one or a Ford...)

speedyxjs - 6/8/10 at 11:43 AM

Iv started noticing a few first gen micras round here too.

I had a gold T reg 1.1L as my first car (I got it 10 years ago) I drove it every day for 4 years
and the guy I sold it to was going to restore it but his daily driver terminaly broke down and he ended up driving the fiesta for the next few years
the car eventualy went off the road for restoration last year - so thats 29 years of constant daily use (of course it wasn't doing many miles in a day)

I'd have another one if I could find the cash

i see loads of mx5s about but i've not seen a mk2 cav (that's not been ours) for probably 7 or 8 years round by us.

gottabedone - 6/8/10 at 03:56 PM

We've got quite a few early Scirocco's and Golfs (MK1 and 2) around here and a couple of Alfa 75's

Steve

blakep82 - 6/8/10 at 04:09 PM

went out today, saw a different cav i hadn't seen before, and a classic mini.

Steve Hignett - 6/8/10 at 04:18 PM

There are a few classics around here (smaller town I guess), most mentioned above (MX5's MK1 'Esta's and a couple of Mk1 or 2 Cav etc) but the car I seem to see a lot of are the older 5 Series BM's for some reason!

Ivan - 6/8/10 at 04:45 PM

In SA every second car is an old one and what with Golf 1's only stopping production this year there are plenty of them.

Otherwise we specialise in old cars highly modified by the rust bug and dragging their own smoke screen behind - normally Nissans and Mazdas although even the Toyotas and Mercedes are getting old enough to start smoking now.

Age of these cars is proportional to the degree of variable camber with each wheel being different and the height and speed of wheel bounce because of failed shocks.

Unfortunately the insurance they carry is inversely proportional to age (the greater the age the less insurance)and condition and directly proportional to braking performance ( the less the brakes the less the insurance). (Insurance is not compulsory here )

The one positive ???? is that the older the car the slower they drive to save fuel although in the Eastern Cape they tend cut corners (for the same reason I think) no matter how blind the corner is, so always slow down drastically for left hand blind bends as you can expect to find a car head on on your side of the road even if the speed limit is 120 kph
