Friend's Audi Tintop

A friend has replaced his cam belt and Diesel pump belt but really struggling to time it. We have checked the timing marks and all looks good with that we have used a dial gauge on the Diesel pump and adjusted the pump to 32 degrees and rotated the engine 360 degrees but can not get the dial to read 25 ±2 as it should. The figures on the dial change every time we do it down as far as 14 and as high as 34 degrees. Anyone on here with knowledge of there engines?

My mate was not having a good day as he managed to reverse the Audi over his VAG Com laptop! Dose anyone know where we can gat a cheap or better still free copy of VAG Com? I think he said it was 3.1.1 if that makes sense?

There's no cheap or free Vagcom's around, only VCDS Lite which is the free, shortened version. It can't do timing though you have to get the license which is $99 from Rosstech.

Where's Bushey? I can do IP timing on my laptop, assuming it's an older TDi?

Just found it on googley maps. Unfortunately a bit out of the way!

Does it run at all - symptoms of running/starting might help determine whether it needs advancing or retarding.
