The eagle eyed amongst you will spot the hard top it came with. Rest assured that even with 6 month's MOT and tax, it was still at a Zil price. Drive's like a dream.

Now.

Where are all you MX5 nancy boys ?

(Actually, I think we have more in common than anyone would care to admit.)

I think you have more in common with this!

my mate was one of the engineers that designed the mgf back in the early 90's, i'll see if he has drawings of the early prototypes

bashracing - 18/3/13 at 07:13 PM

This was what they finally went with!

zilspeed - 18/3/13 at 07:24 PM

That's nearly right, but wrong.

It's had 136,000 miles so far, so...

DarrenW - 18/3/13 at 08:14 PM

Let me start the Zilprice speculation.......... £12.98 + packet of black currant chewits? And maybe you had to do timing belt and give it a super whopping £31.52 full service.

Looks like good fun car. Well done.

Darren.

You misjudge me Sir.

I paid good money for this.

6 months T&T, MLS headgasket, leather interior, hard top, VVC engine.

£600 of your earth quids.

On a more Zil like planet, I got a quote of £404 from a VW dealer to repair my Passat last week.
I did it for precisely zero pounds, some of my time, and some servisol nicked from my mate's toolbox.

DarrenW - 18/3/13 at 08:41 PM

My word! Did England just get stuffed at Rugby, prompting a Scot celebration?,!!!!!

Still a bargain in anyone's books. Very well done.

Is it fair to assume you may have been distracted by a shiny new 10 bob piece hidden behind the drivers side seat runner? Their wise you might have stuck out for a deal at £575?

600 is an unbelievable bargain, I'm jealous of that.

If it does not have a head gasket problem, then why the MLS gasket ? as it was changed at some point, and probaly two weeks ago

Steve

17 year old car, 136,000 miles, 3 owners. Hardly the type of thing that's been such a basket case that everyone moved it on to the next mug who then sat it in his garage to he got over the trauma.

Head gasket done 2 years ago. I'm not unhappy about that.
The seller was an MGOC member in his 60s, bloke with an MGB and a beard.
He sold it with decent MOT, decent tax and insisted on pointing out the defects.

The type of bloke you'd like to buy a car from.

By the time I'd sold the hard top for £250, the remaining car looks a fair deal at £350 (with 6 months t&t).

whitestu - 18/3/13 at 09:30 PM

You can't exactly lose much at that price!

exactly my thoughts!

morcus - 18/3/13 at 10:33 PM

Sounds great. People are always asking me why I prefer to buy my cars at that price level (I don't have to I had a brand new car from 09 till last year) then the next thing they're telling me is they're paying out for work that cost more than my car. Enjoy it, I really wanted one but after the hassle I had with the Eunos, I doubt I will any time soon.

inkafone - 18/3/13 at 11:32 PM

Turn it into this -

^^^^^^^^. What he said!!!

The interior is a bit, errr, bright, but for the money, I like it !!

Hence my description of the interior.
Personally, I feel it would be churlish to complain.

you can let me know whether that's a compliment or tongue in cheek

zilspeed - 21/7/13 at 09:00 PM

Major update !!!

Err, nothing to report.

I drive it whenever I can, usually top down, and so far it has suffered precisely zero mechanical failures.
I give it the beans whenever I can. 7,250rpm in 2nd gear is a hoot.

As we speak, it could do with an OSF drop link.

£15 on eBay.
Other than that, I scored a free set of alloys with good tyres a couple of weeks ago,

It's a white knuckle ride, I tell you,

Another non update in 6 months time

nick205 - 21/7/13 at 10:45 PM

Nice, that's good motoring in anyone's book

zilspeed - 24/8/13 at 12:49 PM

Another major update.

Put it in for an MOT yesterday.

It passed.

Total spend to date, £10.95 for a drop link. (Found it cheaper)

But, I was given a tonneau cover which I sold for £46, so total spend is actually -£35.

It's a drama every day, I'll tell you.

zilspeed - 19/10/13 at 11:27 AM

And it's gone.

Sold last week for £580.

The head gasket was still fine, nothing had broken.

It's been replaced by a 2003 TF135.

big_wasa - 19/10/13 at 01:16 PM

can I join
I didn't get the chance to do Cadwell in the 7 so .....
My new interim toy after I told the wife no more toys until we move house

And all for less than the price of the Iva..........

zilspeed - 19/10/13 at 02:17 PM

Excellent !

:-)

zilspeed - 27/12/13 at 10:11 AM

The 2003 MGTF that I replaced the 1996 MGF with ?

That's now sold, it was crap.

The first car had a lovely supple chassis and an engine that loved to rev. The TF had neither of these qualities.

It had to go.

Got my money back, added a little, bought a MK4 Golf, it's the antithesis of a sports car of any description.

I think I like it. It has 175/80 R14 tyres on steel wheels. The very thing for the roads around here.

zilspeed - 21/3/14 at 05:32 PM

Major update.

That Golf ?

Meh....

Flogged it, now I'm definitely a hairdresser.

Audi TT 225 quattro, with a small q.

Being me, I bought it for a grand.

Pics soon.

UncleFista - 21/3/14 at 06:46 PM

Is that the one with the new water pump ? I've not been on FB for ages

zilspeed - 21/3/14 at 06:48 PM

That's the one.

New turbo 3 years ago, new water pump and timing belt.

This one. Goes a bit quicker than I'm used to if I'm completely honest. Not sure if it's been tweaked, but it pulls very hard and is pretty addictive.

Bob.

The red MGF was from autotrader.
The TF was from a family member.
The Golf was from Gumtree.
The TT is from a friend from usenet days who I'm still in contact with.

That's the best one so far.

He bought it 3 years ago with a blown turbo, for £500.
He fitted a new turbo and ran it for 3 years.
Recently the water pump failed, so he fitted a new pump, new timing belt and also a crank sensor.

He put a years MOT onto it and sold it to me for £1000.

It has weak synchro in 2nd gear and that's about it. It goes like a speeding pullet.

The picture above isn't very good, it looks much nicer than that.

splitrivet - 25/3/14 at 12:39 AM

They all look good, thinking of swapping out my Galaxy for something similar for the missus and changing my Combo van for a LWB Vivaro with a day van conversion. The wife wants a Camper Van but when push comes to shove if I bought one If i said on a Friday night lets go away for the w/e it'll be corry/emmerdale/xfactor/grandkids birthdays on we will have to stay home, so I cant see the point, but I do fancy a day van.
Cheers,
Bob

zilspeed - 25/3/14 at 10:43 PM

I had an old Citroen Synergie.

We used it in 5 seat config with the back seats right at the back and loads of space in the centre.

With the front seats turning round, Captain's chair style, it was a properly useful dayvan.
We used it at the racing just like that on a few occasions.

Highly recommended and very useful.

zilspeed - 12/10/17 at 12:04 PM

Old thread revival tastic !!

I now have a MKIV Golf GTI 1.8t.

It's the worst one to have, apparently.

I love it.

I read the mk4 bit and groaned, then just laughed when i read the next line!

My daughter had one for a while - I hated it! What with the windows dropping down into the door (don't slam the doors with the windows down!), the glove compartment that refused to open when a bit of plastic broke, the leaks into the passenger compartment when the rear washers were used... the list went on...

...and all of the faults were well documented at the time, yet still appeared in the Seat that used the same chassis a few years later.

I didn't think it was particularly fast either - too lardy (not me - although it could be said - but the car).

zilspeed - 12/10/17 at 05:26 PM

I've had this 18 months now and in that time it's had, let me think.

I put a wing on it when I got it and repaired the sill where it had rotted through near the wing.
("They all do that sir".

Thermostat so it warms up now.

New regulator on the alternator.

Couple of bottom wishbones.

It's a second car of course, and cost me £500.

It's no sports car, there's a surprise.

I quite like its rather oleaginous feel, being old now ;-)

I won't mention that I also have a Toyota Hybrid now...

I won't tell anyone...

I must say that "oleaginous" is a splendid word to come across in LocostBuilders... we really must try to squeeze in a few such epithets to improve the collective grammar!

I had expected to attract considerable opprobrium, or at least a mild upbraiding for such florid language.

trextr7monkey - 12/10/17 at 10:27 PM

What tax did he try to transfer! Surely you have to tax it? Damn more expense!
For those getting excited about one of these a mechanic in Gretna who services 6 of our family cars has. Silver autoMGF which he will sell for some similar crazy price haven't got full details here but I have seen the car and it looks good I can find more information should anyone want it
Atb
Mike

EDIT just saw post date ignore comments re tax!
