BBQ issues..low pressure until shaken!?
tegwin - 18/2/13 at 05:49 PM

Ok, so the sun has been shining so my housemates decided to fire up the gas inferno in the garden and cook some meat.... Sweet!

Only issue is.... I have a 25Kg bottle of butane (blue one) which must be over 3/4 full.... With all four burners on the barbie lit they started off ok but gradually become weaker unless you keep shaking the gas cylinder... Any ideas why this is? Unless I stand and shake constantly I wont be able to burn my steaks!?

Is it because Butane doesn't like cold temps?

It's not cold.. I only have two jumpers on today!!

The boiling point of Butane is only around -1C. With all four burners the amount of gas you are using is causing the temperature of the bottle to drop significantly, and combined with cold ambient temperatures you have your answer.

The above answers are correct.

Is it a large bbq ? Is there room to stand the bottle on the grill next to the steak, that'll beep it warm !

eta...Before someone takes the comment seriously.....I'm joking

Propane has a lower vapour point and works at much lower temps, just need to re-jet the bbq to suit.

^^^^^

Mike is right on the money - change to propane and you'll be fine.

Aha.... that would explain it..the tank has been sat in the garage all winter... will bring it to bed with me tonight and see if I can warm it up a bit

Stand the cylinder in a bucket of warm water or the like and keep topping up with the kettle if your still keen on using it on the cold

As temperature approaching 1c you need Propane rather than butane

using the principles of the jet propelled beer cooler,
stand it in said bucket of water and recharge occasionally with warm beer (in tins or bottles),
warning though, disposal of cold beer may present hazards (Hic

Another vote for Propane

Not one single vote for the real bbq cooking medium of charcoal? Shame!
