Am changing from a pinto to duratec engine.
Got engine from scrappies and about to change head as aquired a new head with uprated cams and springs etc.
Taking the head off, the top of the pistons dont look in great condition, I suspect its just from where engine has been sat with nothing happening
with it for a while?
Havent tried turning by hand as didnt want to cause any damage to the bore
Hopefully pic will give you some idea, will try get better pics if needed.
Anyone advice/thoughts appreciated
If turning by hand causes damage, I suspect its already knackered?
Did you get some mleage proof from the scrappy?

Ive got what he said the mileage was written down on paper
Dont know if it is too bad, might just be superficial and fine
Put a picture up
Weird, I did out pic on original post not sure why not there will try ahain
Looks like normal coking to me, perhaps a bit black/oily.
Presumably as cheap as they are its worth just running it.
Oil the bores let it soak for a while and then spin it over.
Scrape the tops clean, put your head on and run it
Cheers
Wot no replys from anyone with a CEC??
you always knew where you were with a pinto.
Looks exactly like my duratec did when I took it apart....just normal coking as already mentioned, cleaned it up and its all good
Took the head to a machine shop and had it cleaned up and lightly polished too.
You wont regret going from Pinto to Duratec.
Duratec? Wot bike's that off then?

Putting the new head on does anyone recommend using a sealant as well as gaskets or just the gaskets?
I'd sauy gasket only on that engine.
But what do I know i've got a BEC
Piston crowns look fine - not much carbon build up at all.
Use just a little bit of sealant at the front of the block where timing chain cover meets the small gap between the head and the block (not much at
all just so it oozes out a bit).
Looks like the block has corroded quite a bit - use GT85 sprayed over the aluminium block etc and left to dry (not down the bores though).
Is it hi port head you're looking to fit?
Good change from Pint to Dura!
