AVG is good, Avast is better. Updates are far less hassle, and you don't get half the grief trying to download the free version.

Use a proper package Avira AntiVir Premium --- Gives 100% reliable protection and unlike some of the other downloads programs gives few false positives. and has a a proper professional looking interface not like something from Disney land.

You can use the Premium paid for version for 30 days free test use or use the 100% free Anti-Vir Free Personal edition which lacks web and email screening features.

The only real draw back of the free edition is updates can be slow to download due to over loaded server.
For more info see

Even better - do what I do on my main computer, and use an operating system that's not got more security holes than a colander...

(Ubuntu fan - but I do use Avast on my Windoze boxes that I use for odd jobs like running the Megajolt and JAW setup programs.)

AVAST is the best I've found. Don't be fooled into paying for antivirus software as reviews support the conclusion that the free programs are just as good as the paid for ones. Also bear in mind that nothing is 100% reliable at detecting viruses and that common sense is the best protection of all!

Cheers,
Craig.

got avast myself, updates the virus list a couple of times every day (though the voice telling you its updated gets annoying after the first.. well, its annoying right from the start. i did what it tells you to make it stop, but it still does it...)
doesn't slow your PC, and i've not have a virus on this computer yet. its caught them before they get on here.

notrton on my mums laptop on the other hand, has norton, and KEEPS getting viruses on it. 2 in 2 weeks

But ...

You have to uninstall Norton first as it conflicts with Avast etc.
