You can do it in person at the post office
If its been Sorned you will need to take your vehicle registration document etc

No you don't, i didn't anyway. I taxed a sorned car the other week by going to the local post office and saying i had forgotten the v11.
No questions asked.

Eh blake? Just go to the post office with your mot and insurance, take the v5 just incase, play dumb and tell them you forgot the v11. They
didn't check to see if it's sorned or currently taxed, worked for me.

but you have to have the log book, the v5, thats what he can't find!
wouldn't be an issue if he could do it online, but the v11 is oout of date, he can't do it in the post office (untl he finds his v5) and
he can't do it online!

i have the same problem. i tend to put important things in safe places where i wont forget then forget where the safe place was.
dont think you will be able to tax it at the post office without the v5. you should be able to do it down at the local dvla office.
time to rip the house apart and find the v5.

this any help?
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/HowToTaxYourVehicle/DG_069680
says you can do it by phone... probably not the easiest/quickest way, but they might be able to give you some more options of info, or use the old ref
on the v11? don't know, but worth a call?

Did they let you tax it, or is that just an interesting anecdote of your trips to the post office?

I didn't, that's why I posted it because I told them they had to accept the documentation I gave them as that was the documentation I
needed. Turned out they were due to send a new v11 in about a month as that's when the sorn renewal was.
Thing is they either take it or they don't, and I'd have a nice time arguing that I'm trying to be legal so if I'm not allowed
to be legal is it any wonder so many people don't bother? Think of all those uninsured cars in the country, maybe it's because
you're looking at several times the value of the car just to be covered? Maybe that's why so many people don't.
However that's a different rant...

From DVLA website:
4 If you are already the registered keeper of a vehicle but have lost your
V5C, you can tax your vehicle at a DVLA local office, but you will need to
fill in a V62 and pay a fee. Or, if there are no changes to your details, you
can phone Customer Enquiries on 0300 790 6802 and pay a fee to apply
for a new V5C. When you receive your new V5C, you will be able to tax
your vehicle at a Post Office® branch that issues tax discs or apply online.
As Blake said, I would tax it by phone using your V11, even if it is out of date.
