"Belly Tank" refers to the fact that the originals were made from old aeroplane belly tanks or auxiliary fuel tanks.

That's where the car body comes from hence why it's such an aerodynamic shape

"Belly racer" as in made from the supplementary fuel "belly" tanks that were suspended below a fighter plane in the 40's. They were salvaged and used to make aero car bodies.
