BEC rad and oil cooler

just tought i put up a pic of my new rad i got from alloy racing fabrications... I wanted the oil cooler at the front of the car and was wondering what way to do it so spoke to james and he said to mount the oil cooler and he would make a mount for it in front of the rad ....well impressed with the service

Very nice. I'm not sure about the fan bracket though; Isn't it blocking off about 10% of the airflow?

Well I wouldn't trust a drill not to slip and go through the matrix.

I'm perfectly hapy with my Polo rad, Matt. Over an hour stuck in an Italian lunch time trafic at +90'F and it was perfectly happy. You can't get a more extreme test than that.

Just make sure you mount the oil cooler with the connections at the top - in your picture above they are at the bottom. If you use it like this you will find it almost impossible to bleed the air out of it and it will play havoc with the oil pressure in your engine.

Nice bit of work though :-)

I shouldnt think there any problem with mounting the cooler upside down as its a pressureized system ...??

I think you are wrong. It may be pressurised but air can easily become trapped at the top of the cooler, causing fluctuations in the oil pressure. Its the same for your pressurised water system - get an airlock and you cooling doesn't work properly.

Just my opinion based on experience.

yeah but mounting it the other way round with the fitting on top where does the air go???? its completely sealed

to the highest point in the system, which is in the cylinder block.
they're right, as it is just now, your cooler will be filled with air all the time, and oild won't be getting cooled.

think about your radiators at home, the need bleeding from time to time (and whenever the system is comletely emptied and refilled) as the air can't get out. the fittings should always be at the top

its only a case of unbolting it and turning it over anyway, and you will need to drill the top mount to allow the connections to poke through
