Has anyone here ever built or heard of a diesel locost? I know it kind of goes against the whole ethos of what these cars represent, but wondered if anyone had done it?
People have built pretty much all combinations...
I've certainly heard of diesels, autos, LPG cars etc etc. Have a look on the locost car club site?

Theres no reason why you couldn't put a diesel in one but I don't know anyone who has.
Lightweight cars are better with low torque / high revving engines. Diesels are high torque and low revving. This will tend to give more wheelspin
in low gears, though perhaps no more than a big V8
Westfield I believe sold them new at some point with a 4 pot ford diesel smoker.
I believe there were (are) threads on the U.S. Locostbuilders site on this. I think a current TDI turbodiesel would probably work rather well,
actually...especially with a very tall diff...

I live in the West Midlands, and for a rather long time now I have made slow cars go faster (and faster and faster). I also have a soft spot for
pretty old classics that require welding.
I have come to the conclusion that no matter what amount of BHP I shoehorn under the bonnet of a production bonnet I'll never reach the point of
'enough'
Then I hit upon the idea of taking something about the weight of a tray a takeaway curry might come in and wedge some power into it. Turns out you lot
have already been doing that for years.
So my thoughts are turning very much towards building a locost. Not so much worried about the 'lo' bit.
The only thing standing between me and starting a project is a floor pan, double sill replacement and a respray of my 40 year old MG. Should have that
dusted my next spring (if past experience is anything to go by) then that should free up some floor space to start building something to scare myself
with... 
turbo bike engine, they dont get much more scaryer than that, turbo busa can produce well over 400bhp at the wheels, you ned a buggati veron to catch it to 100mph.
Twin bike engines like the Tiger Z100 if costs not a problem (techincal bit will be though - but Z Cars in Hull will be able to take care of that bit!)
I thought the Z100 was only any use in a straight line? Although it would be quite cool!

That's about two good weekend's work, or shove it outside and throw a tarp over it and order some metal. Don't get too hung up on the power thing, they go well with a lowly 1300 Xflow
