will it pass MOT?
andyfiggy2002 - 12/8/05 at 11:56 AM

have fitted small race mirrors, small motorbike front indicators & 90mm dia. 60w headlamps to my 2004 registered BEC, obviously not SVA compliant but much more aerodynamic , question is will it pass the MOT in a couple of years time?

It depends largely on who you take it to for the MOT. If you are taking it to a normal garage they might question it, but most places have specialist garages who are more acustomed to dealing with specials, kits, classics etc. Do you have a regular garage that you use a lot?

If it does fail, what's the worst that happens, an hour in the garage looking for the old lamps and mirrors, another hour or so to swap them back over the the SVA friendly jobbies. Even less if you use modular connectors on the lights.

As far as I know most MOT testers just check do you have the right number of lights and do they work, and a simple count of the mirrors?

Not sure about the legality of the other bits but are you sure that the mirrors would not be ok? I was amazed how small you can have an SVA compliant rear view mirror. It's something like 70mm by 50mm which is tiny! I doubt many MOT bods would bother measuring stuff. So long as it works as it should i.e. lights light up and mirror allow a view of behind and are not obscured then I have thought it would be fine.

they will check beam pattern at mot, so as long as they're not bike pattern lights and dip to the correct side, not centre, you should be ok.

Like Ned says, only area of concern for an MOT tester would be beam pattern of headlights.

What is the problem with small bike indicators? Do they have to be a minimum size, I thought that as long as they pushed out enough light and were E marked they were ok, is this not the case?
