Hi all,
I'm at my wits end with this PC thing.
I'm not a complete numpty with computers, but this problem has had me going for weeks!
Ok, I've got a desktop running XP Pro SP2, a laptop running XP Home SP2, a Dell Axim with Wifi, all connected with a Linksys router.
Internet connection is fine with desktop, with USB modem (wanadoo broadband - Speedtouch 330).
I can connect to network with laptop and see all shared files, so the wireless bit is working. I can also ping the entire network from any device with no reported problems, it's just the internet thing
I'm using DHCP, WPA-PSK with TKIP encryption on both PCs. I've been to microsoft site - no help there, used network diagnosis tools on XP help - reports healthy except internet bit.
The annoying thing is this all worked before I re mastered my desktop. I've re installed network devices and drivers a number of times and they seem ok.
I'm wondering if it's anything to do with internet explorer or ICS or something else!!

I had this trouble last night when I installed a linksys wireless card in my lappy. In the end I had to let windows handle the card and not the linksys software.

In my wireless networking properties I had to tick 'use windows to configure my wireless network settings' then manual enter the wep numbers etc. If the linksys software was running in the task bar It would say i had a network but no internet.

I also haad to go into internet explorer>tools>internet options>connections> and sort the setup out so that it used an always on connection not dialup etc.

turn off DHCP. pick a static IP address and your problems should be over.

I had a similar problem all the faults you mention... used a static IP the 255.255.196.1 jobby and it still never connected to the internet. I'm no PC phobiac either but this was frying my brain... in the end a friend of mine (network analyst had a go, never solved it either) In the end I narrowed it right down to my soft-firewall. I was using Kerio - not anymore, now I've got two bluetooth USB Dongles and the connection speed is great - use Sygate firewall (as it's not so intrusive). Lots quicker to setup, lots more reliable and cheaper. Both dongles for £16 from bigpockets.co.uk - now I'm sorted and happy. Plus you can link to bluetooth enabled phones and a whole load of other blue tooth equipment. Range is in excess of 100m.

A bit puzzled over your setup

are you saying you have a USB modem plugged in to your main pc and are using internet sharing on that PC with the WAN port of a the linksys plugged into the PC's network port ?

what linksys router do you have?

sorry to say this but USB 'broadband modems' are total crap. Almost every problem I have had with broadband installations has been down to USB modems....

Turned off DHCP, still the same.
Can ping all over network, but no internet.

Will try switching off firewall

Having just re-read your post....

If I am guessing your setup correctly.. is your Internet connection sharing on the main PCV switched on post the rebuild?

Hmm, IP address interesting, I was using 192.168.1.***
BUT if I change to 192.168.0.***, I can't ping my router, nor enter the router setup page!

you'll need to change the network settings in the router setup and reboot it before you change the IP address on the clients

assuming you are using ICS and the setup is as I guessed then you need ideally

IP address of main PC 192.168.0.1

WAN address of router 192.168.0.2

LAN address of router, something else - suggest 192.168.1.1

DHCP on LAN of router to match LAN IP e.g.
192.168.1.2-192.168.1.254

ensure ICS is switched on at main PC

check/ try disabling any firewalls etc.

At the risk of getting boring,
If I click on LAN connection in Network connections, I get an IP address of 192.168.0.101 on desktop, 192.168.0.102 on Laptop and router IP set to 192.168.0.1
Got my ping back all around network, and can access router setup page from all devices.
Better than before, but STILL no internet!
Have tried disabling firewalls (windows XP)/ spyware detectors (spycatcher) etc.
No change

Ahhhh

so judging from your addresses I have guessed your configuration slightly wrong ?

looks like you are getting DHCP addresses for both the desktop and laptop which implies that you have both connected to the routers LAN side.....

what is the complete output from a IPCONFIG /ALL command ? (in a cmd window)

please copy the entire output and paste it into a post (you need to right click on the banner at the top of the window and select edit>select all>copy)

I'm pretty certain from your config that Internet connection sharing is switched off......

Well that would explain a lot, but in Network Connections, icon for Internet says shared, Firewalled, connected.

Properties / advanced have all 3 checkboxes ticked

Just spent an hour live chatting with linksys support bloke, had me do everything I've already done. At the end he said "well your pcs appear to be communicating with each other"

thing is when you enable ICS it is supposed to force the ip address to 192.168.0.1 so i am confused ??

can you confirm exactly what model linksys you have ?

Fresh head today. Im convinced its an ICS problem, but not sure how to cure it!
Linksys router is WRK54G, laptop card is WPC54G. Bought as a kit from PC world.

as an experiment try setting the IP address on your laptop to a static address

ip 192.168.0.102
mask 255.255.255.0
default gateway 192.168.0.101

Have switched DHCP off, so all devices have static IPs. Thought I was getting somewhere, switched firewall off for LAN connection (router) on desktop, and can now access internet wirelessly with PDA.
Briefly got an icon in network connections showing gateway to internet via desktop. BUT restarted both PCs and lost it!!

BTW, should the default gateway address be the same as the router IP or desktop IP or neither?

Bugger me, I think I've got it!!
I'm even writing this on the laptop
it seems that when I disabled DHCP, I didn't put the DNS addresses in!
Set the router to 192.168.0.254
desktop to 192.168.0.1, laptop to 192.168.0.2, and all is well!!
Windows firewall seemed to give the most problems though, may upgrade to Zone alarm or summat.
