motorcycle helmets - stickers?
alistairolsen - 13/2/09 at 10:58 PM

Is anyone familiar with the certification of motorcycle helmets?

Specifically there were two on the helmet I was looking at, a gold one in the middle of the rear of the helmet and one on the front with 4/5 stars on it.

I cant recall the names on them however. Just wondering if anyone knew?

I *think* the helmet was a box BX2 and the star rating is here:link

hi, without seeing the stickers to fully confirm, but sounds like the star one is just the rating issued by the manufacturer but the gold one on the back may well be the acu gold sticker certifacation sticker which means its been assessed as suitable for track use,
in fact some circuits insist on gold stickered helmets.
it should say " ACU" in small letters around its edge.
hope that helps.

ps ... don,t take the acu sticker off.

looks familiar.

Does this make it a decent helmet? it seemed to fit ok?

ok, it does have an ACU gold stamp and also this:

Safety Standard ECE22.05.

yep thats the acu gold sticker, as said earlier some circuits won,t allow you on track if helmet doesn,t have this.
helmet design has improved a great deal in last few years & lots more choice of helmet that have passed this safety standard that the sticker is confirmation of passing, so in answer to your question..... its passed safety standard checks so gives you piece of mind.
i haven,t got the codes but by having that safety standard coding i would suggest that if it fits nicely ( they do give a little after few weeks ) & you like the design / colour etc then its a good lid for you.
don,t ever drop it & don,t put other stickers on it & don,t paint it .
hth.

ps.. oh sometimes if you gently peel back the cloth material inside the helmet some makers put in the year it was made on a label, its just out of sight.
i used to race motorbikes & went thru quite a few helmets
my favourite make was Shoei

Thanks a lot, I shall have to go back and have a look in more detail!

no prob, good luck with your choice, the only other thing to consider & its down to personal choice is the chin strap type of fitting,
some use double "D" rings & others a seat belt type buckle.
i prefer the latter as once its set at the tightness required it stays like that & just press the button like a seat belt.
& buy the best you can afford as there is no price too small to protect the head,
cheers
andy

or should that be no price too high to protect the head??

The star ratings are probably the new government SHARP rating. They are re-testing every helment on the market to give it a new rating out of a maximum of 5.....Jury is still out about how accurate these starts are as they test some very specific things which may not have tht much real world bearing....its a new thing and they're still testing helmets etc so don't know how much notice I would take with it. As has been said I would go for one that fits right and is comfy! Oli.
