enginbe transplant or not?

hmmm, the days are getting longer and warmer so that means 2 thing:

a) working in garage is tolerable
b) there are better things to do that working in the garage.

So, should I replace my 1300 xflow by a tuned 1660?

I would need to remake engine mounts, spend a bit of cash on a head, timing gear, new inlet manifold.

Having to take bits of body work off, I may paint that orange which of course increase amount of work.

... then there are the brakes, I am not happy with the stopping power, mainly due to positon of pedal - ideally I owuld need to raise the brake/cltuch pivots whcih again is a load of work not to mention the hydraulics.

and all of this will mean informing DVLA and having to pay more tax.

on the other hand I oculd be driving or doing more interesting stuff.

and tax runs out end of this month; I have next week off work so could make a fair bit of progress.....

hmmmm......

Zetec? I know that makes you exhaust redundant.. how about a duratec?

You've already got the induction...

Thought you just got your tax? Get out and drive it

i just replaced my 1300 with a 1640, no new mounts, no new manifold, and no new exhaust, and the change is very noticable.

i wasn't happy with my brakes too, so i just changd my pads to mintex, and there great.

i suspect the problem being the same as me, your very used to a modern servo systems. the mintex fixed this.

do it very easy and simple and quick to do, took me about a month, working only on saturdays

9 months later it’s back on the road again...

If it was me I'd just thrash the cr£p out the 1300 and get good at really driving the thing. I had a similar thing with the Falcon when I put the v6 in it, took me about 2 months and had to make just about everything from the exhaust to the engine mounts. Now the 2ltrs back in cos it was more fun thrashing around revving the nuts of the engine pushing the car to the limit, even though it wasn't really that fast compared to a modern car but it was more enjoyable than the molten brakes the v6 caused.

Only you can really decide if the cars underpowered

mounts needed as original ones are car*p (not made by me).

the head on 1600 block sits about 30 mm higher so I will need to drop engine a bit (10 - 20 mm?) in order for the exhaust to exit via the existing hole - I can move the exhaust surround a bit (or make new one I suppose = more work) to avoid having a hole showing plus to get underbonnet clearance.

then there is cooling - I owuld like to move radiator to inside nose cone hence would need header tank.

the 1300 and 1600 manifolds have different angle, I would need the 1600 to be make to use the hole for the air filters in the bonnet.

guess i was just lucky then. sounds like if you can't be bothered with the hassle then just leave it and accept it

Dangle_kt - 10/3/09 at 03:42 PM

it sounds like you don't want to do it to me.

Why not keep it as is this summer, enjoy it and then sort it next winter?

02GF74 - 10/3/09 at 03:55 PM

... but next winter iwll be the same - too cold to work in garage .....

If you got a Q, you won't pay more road tax no matter what engine you put in it.

I wouldn't bother replacing one crossflow with another, but then, that's me.

I just replaced a Rover V8 with a ..........

it is not Q.

rover V8 would be nice as I already have one in LAnd Rover but ther is not enough space plus I owuld need to change gearbox - I am trying to minimise amount of work.
