can it get any worse!!!
chris_smith - 16/3/09 at 07:26 PM

with the sva fast approaching (this friday) im off work this week to sort all the final bits.
at 10 o'clock this morning everything is going swimmingly, finished the wiring for the rad fan temp switch so starts the engine to test,
tick over for few minutes then start to give her a few revs to warm things up,
suddenly a knocking sound appears

what the **** is that!!!!!

turns her off , almost sounded as though a spanner or something rattling or knocking against something, so checks around cant find anything, shook the car in the hope some tool would drop out,

nothing

starts her up again, same noise, add some revs slowly and the sound seems to subside, mmm one is now worried.

anyway my dad arrives, and rightly suggests whipping it out and checking bigend's etc, his comment went something along the lines of:
"it wont fix itself stood there staring at it!!!"

so we gets her out oil and water everywhere as you can imagine,
sump off checking for anything obvious when a place my weight on the fly wheel, and it moved as if loose

off comes the clutch plate to find that all the flywheel bolts are loose

cut a long story short we then went about tightening to torque etc

anyway to think nothing else could go wrong was a silly mistake

as we dropped her back in we somehow ripped an engine mount rubber off

so i now need to get my hands on one before thursday

chris

please look at this link re engine mount

Wait, you have a woman in there instead of an engine?
Stick with it mate, don't let it beat you.

my dad says this to me all the time when things go wrong

at least you got the problem before it caused any major damage

On the plus side, far better you found this now than have the flywheel part company at 6000RPM, with the very strong possibility of it removing your legs at the same time

Call me a big girl, but I went and bought some ARP bolts for the flywheel on my Striker, and spent some time making sure the threads in the crank were pristine before torquing the bolts up with loctite. The idea of what is effectively a very heavy circular saw blade rotating a few inches from my legs does worry me a bit.

.... so does the napalm bomb behind your head......

.... and the spinning toothpick to your left ....

.... and the four big rubber earrings either side!

Still, you could own a Golf Mk4 - the flywheel is riveted to the crank, and they have been known to come undone in more than a few cases!

So it's not just us amateur mechanics...

.... not to mention the chelsea tractors, the sundar paper drivers, boy racers, taxi's, learners, hmmmmmm

hope you get it sorted, i was well worried when i had the clutch off the night before my test. Sorted it though thank goodness

Petrol tanks and tyres don't tend to chop your legs off without warning. Prop is a fair point, which is why I welded hoops in.
