What parts of your build do/did you enjoy the most?
Alan B - 15/3/04 at 05:16 PM

Ok, we all have plenty to bitch about in terms of the things we don't like doing, but what about the things that were fun or especially satisfying?

For me, I love the final, post chassis paint, assembly...running brake pipes, etc....when all is clean.

Also, the chassis welding/fab. is quite enjoyable too....

Jon Ison - 15/3/04 at 05:28 PM

TBH i enjoyed it all, but i think the best bits where compliments from others once it was on the road,

Hardest bit, trying to explain the chassis was built at home, "yea but witch kit is it" the bodywork was made at home "but where did you buy it from" ect.........ect......

Peteff - 15/3/04 at 05:40 PM

I like the building part, chassis, wishbones and fabricating. Seeing something appearing from nothing almost.

zetec - 15/3/04 at 05:47 PM

First time I started the engine was a high. I knew it ran but after you strip it to bare bones and then add your own fuel and ignition parts it's nice to know it still goes! Other simple things like the first time you power up the loom and the lights work and no smoke. Passing the SVA is a welcome relief too.

I really enjoyed doing the suspension, I found it very satisfying and it looks so purposeful. It all bolted together very well I thought. I also got a major kick out of hearing the engine going for the first time. Well, who doesn't?

Mk-Ninja - 15/3/04 at 07:25 PM

As Zetec, starting it up for the first time, gives you a real buzz.

I think I'm a rarity - I actually enjoyed planning and installing my electrics!

i enjoyed the feeling i got today, as i realised that brakes are a piece of pi55!!!! its easy!

plus when i first rolled it back and forward on 4 wheels!

Jasper - 15/3/04 at 08:29 PM

Electrics - are you mad!!!! My worst bit.

I loved welding the chassis together and see a car come to life in front of me. Well worth the extra effort of building your own.

stephen_gusterson - 15/3/04 at 08:44 PM

the chassis

getting the suspension right is the pits

to quote something once said to me:

oh my fcking god, you sick bstard, fcking well stay away from me

as for me, the best bit was putting the wheels on, lowering it down and starting it.... only then did it feel real

this car stuff was all new to me and it was all enjoyable but i liked putting the panels on ,this is when i thought it was realy taking shape.i havnt done anough welding to think that i could make my own chassis and i wouldnt be on the road now if i had
figuring a way to do the paddle change was also a smiling point

o yes and working out how i was going to attach my steering wheel

I'm with Pete, Steve and Jasper - making the chassis was the most satisfying part of the build.

But for me driving it is by far the best bit. I just love it.

stephen_gusterson - 15/3/04 at 09:43 PM

some crazy people contemplate driving from Leamington Spa to Kettering whatever the weather too!

nuts I call em

It's not actually part of the 'build' per se, but the first test flight round Nutts Corner was a magical moment. Realising the car was far better than I could have hoped for and I had actually built it.......

Hey - have you been reading my mail again!

rgds,

I have to agree with Mr Jenkins!!! Although i was dreading doing the electrics i actually really enjoyed it, loads of planning and diagrams, plus its a nice clean job! If the loom had melted and nothing worked after i had finished i don't think i would have enjoyed it so much though!! Its the job that has given me the bigggest buzz when it was finished and worked so far!!

David Jenkins - 16/3/04 at 09:43 AM

...and it's a really big kick when you turn the switch, and everything comes to life! (apart from the two fuses I blew, due to user-ability errors).

Austen and Dave - anytime you want to come down and rewire mine nice and neatly - just give me a shout, I'll even make you tea!! (sick b*stards)

Hellfire - 16/3/04 at 12:23 PM

If I had to pick one particular thing, it would be the dashboard. Its easy having designs in your head, but getting them from there and incorporated into the build is often quite difficult and sometimes not achievable at all. So to get it right from conception to installation is quite satisfying.

Mind you.... all the finishing bits are the best bits IMHO

Kitlooney1000 - 16/3/04 at 07:45 PM

I enjoyed the whole build. but the best part was the interior, seeing it all come together and sitting in it when i wasnt working on the car just thinking what it would be like on the road.

Mark Allanson - 16/3/04 at 10:21 PM

I have enjoyed every part, except what I am on at the moment.

I have stripped the car to basic chassis and I am preparing it for paint, I have built the car outside so there is a significant amout of surface corrosion, I have 'tooled' all the bits where it will reach, but now its manual scrubbing!

I think that just about applies for every stage along the way!

flyingkiwi - 17/3/04 at 10:48 AM

Trashing the living crap out of the donor escort. Two day's of grinding heaven!

Worst part - sorting out the electrics so I can fire up the engine
