well its round 2, going to go and have a fight with this bolt using all manor of tools, wish me luck, i shall return victorious or i will bring shame on my household by taking it to the local garage.

What engine is it? Older Ford ones can be a pain sometimes but the answer is a blow-torch. That will melt the washer out and it'll come out easy
then. The oil will dissipate the heat easily so don't worry about that.

brilliant cheers for the advice, ill give it a go in the morning, oh and yes its a pinto with shortened sump.
Find a big nut that fits over the now round stub, weld it on (around the inside) and then undo it.
1) you can get a decent sized spanner onto it
2) it will be bloody hot
I also enjoy the weld a nut on it approach. Heats up the plug nicely and gives the spanner something new with straight edges to apply some NM to....
Used to be a regular problem; usually on a Monday after someones dad had rounded it off on Sunday. Just play the blow-torch flame around the plug
then it should come undone with pliers/mole-grips.
Don't undo it with your fingers when it's slack or pick up the plug though once it's out! Thats easy done!

Wait until you've been struggling for half an hour before realising the bolt's facing the other way and you've been tightening it all that time!
File a couple of flats on it and use an open spanner? Worked for me a couple of times.
Or molegrips done up really tight.

Adjustable pipe wrench? They tighten up the more leverage you apply.
