Who is actually building a Locost?
deezee - 6/4/10 at 02:58 PM

Just like the website title, I'm wondering how many members here are actually building their own locost or similar? I mean actually building and not assembling a comprehensive kit. Or even purchased a completed car and haven't assembled any of it.

im between comprehensive kit and sourcing parts independently.

IMO true locost builders shouldnt be on this site... they should be out welding something

I'm also inbetween those two!!!

mistergrumpy - 6/4/10 at 03:15 PM

Mines true Locost and SVA'd but as they say it's never finished especially because of the IVA avoidance panic so I've counted myself as one that's I'm still building.

blakep82 - 6/4/10 at 03:23 PM

As above, i'm an in between. Bought the chassis 2nd hand, making some parts myself, buying some new from the manufacturer, and sourcing some 2nd hand.

Seven_Monkey - 6/4/10 at 03:40 PM

Locost all the way - from the chassis to the last bolt that goes in... Something to be a little more proud of when finally on the road.

I built the shed
to hold the tools
that made the machine
that built the car...

that isn't finished.................

i,ve voted as per option 1

Bought 42 mtrs of steel, bought a 2nd hand mig, bought cheap taxed n tested sierra, ( £150), bought 2nd hand full body kit (ex display stuff )

its now almost finished, engine runs etc, just need a prop & will be taking it for a spin, on a private road of course

cheers

Making your own bolts that is something to be proud of

Danozeman - 6/4/10 at 04:34 PM

I Was building my own but was doing it outside so it was rusting as fast as i could get it together so gave up.

Bought a chassis and have sourced all the other bits cheapish. Made some stuff altered the chassis alsorts.

Still have most of the metal from before so you never know i may build a true locost.

Yay to being the first to have to tickthe last option (sadface!)

Ive rebuilt lots of it tho... and it was cheap!

big_wasa - 6/4/10 at 05:20 PM

Ive bought the fiberglass but made everything elts.

NigeEss - 6/4/10 at 05:21 PM

Option 1 here as well, except I'm not making the bolts....or the engine, shocks.....
Hang on, How much am I actually making

Steve Hignett - 6/4/10 at 05:39 PM

Option 1, although it's not for me...

TimC - 6/4/10 at 05:40 PM

... I think Steve and I effectively neutralise each others votes don't we?

deanwelch - 6/4/10 at 05:49 PM

last option for me......i don't have the skills or time to build one just the skills to improve and keep it on the road ..........sorry but thats life some can some can't

speedyxjs - 6/4/10 at 06:06 PM

Built the chassis, body parts and modifying a used nosecone and wings.

plentywahalla - 6/4/10 at 07:00 PM

.... beginning to wish I'd gone for 3 ...or even 4.

Be on the road by now instead of next year, and probably spent less money buying bits I didn't need or couldn't use.

andylancaster3000 - 6/4/10 at 07:32 PM

Made it all. Bar the drivers seat and the nosecone (of course not inc. such things as the rack and dampers!). Spose as it's finished I technically should shut up but it's always a nice to brag

@ dhutch: I'm not keen on the car order in your avatar!

andy188 - 6/4/10 at 08:21 PM

built all except seats, rack, rad, hubs, fiberglass parts, all secondhand and these have been modded. andy

Daddylonglegs - 6/4/10 at 08:30 PM

Built the chassis from scratch, modified the F/G bits (car wider than standard). Made my own side panels and will do reaar panel and bonnet.

Trying to do as much from scratch as I can including the loom which is proving somewhat time consuming . But I want the satisfaction of doing as much as poss myself.

Just hope I've done a good enough job

deezee - 6/4/10 at 08:33 PM

Wow, it seems everyone is at it! I too have opted to build everything from scratch and although I find it frustrating at times, building with out comprehensive instructions, I also find great satisfaction from finally making something and that it fits

livelee - 6/4/10 at 08:45 PM

I'm having a car built for me, Everything fabricated from scratch. It's nearly finished.

do you get involved with the build???

Marcus - 7/4/10 at 11:46 AM

The only thing I paid full price for were the Gaz shocks and springs. The rest I either made, was given or modified stuff.
The panels were all seconds from MK, cost me 50 quid for the lot (needed a lot of fettling though).
All in about 1500 quid on the road including tax and insurance.
(And i got my pic in Chris Gibbs book )

Yeah, I pop round on a weekly (ish) basis to make tea, check progress etc. I've got my hands dirty a few times.

I'll post up a thread when she's finished.

Marked option 1, but not Locost by any means.
