when you just can't help yourself...

A see how she fits attempt so I can see where can mount an oil cooler and my accusump system, I've got about 75mm ground clearance too. Got a couple of small changes to make but not bad for a car 40mm ish longer than a catering van

David Jenkins - 14/4/10 at 07:48 PM

Ooooh - that WILL be fun when it's finished!

big_wasa - 14/4/10 at 07:49 PM

Looking forward to seeing that at a show or somthing

koiking125 - 14/4/10 at 07:49 PM

LBMEFM - 14/4/10 at 07:49 PM

They stop the pigeons landing and making a mess...

dlatch - 14/4/10 at 07:55 PM

thats looking pretty awesome franky
75mm clearence on sump is not too bad either, is that with standard unmodded sump? so you could intheory gain more clearance?

perksy - 14/4/10 at 07:57 PM

Nice to see somebody doing something different

It Won't be Slow when its finished

Dangle_kt - 14/4/10 at 07:59 PM

Love it!

How does injectors/air filter height look?

mmmmmmm. V Nice

55ant - 14/4/10 at 08:10 PM

v. smart. wonder how much quicker than an m3 it will be!!!!!!!

franky - 14/4/10 at 08:16 PM

Air filter is lower than the fuel rail, I've turned it through 180 degrees for IVA then I'll turn it back forward and make a cutout in the bonnet so I can route it to a duct in the nose cone.

Easiest way to think of the engine is like a v-6 as its cylinder bank slopes at 20 deg, the trumpets curve downwards into the airbox which fits in a treat. As with all high power N/A engines you can't just ditch the airbox so it was a relief that it managed to fit.

The bits sticking up are cleco's which are a type of temporary rivet so you can remove panels.

The engine's got to move towards the bulkhead by about another 10ish mm. The sump is a m3 evo one, which was developed on the 3.0 race cars as they had oil starvation problems on us banked circuits, this was the race solution which became standard on the 3.2 evo's, I've not chopped about as its a race spec sump as standard with built in windage tray and twin pickup's.

Looks very good !!

Finally hoping to get my donor engine pulled this weekend - only got reverse light switch, clutch slave and power steering to disconnect now and I'm ready to go.

steve m - 14/4/10 at 08:52 PM

i am not a fan of BMW, as they are over rated, over priced, and over here

But your instalation, of that bit of pig iron, does look VERY NEAT !!!!

almost looks along the v10 lines ?

Makes my complicated xflow engine bay look very complicated

regards

steve

franky - 14/4/10 at 09:09 PM

I've not got the wiring loom on it at the minute, that'll make most bays look simple add onto that water and oil lines plus steering and exhaust.... getting a headache thinking about it. I reckon a v10 m5 would go in but they're just too heavy and powerful, this is a nice simple straight 6.

That looks a treat.

franky - 14/4/10 at 09:55 PM

They're Clecko's very useful things when fitting panels. Basically a temporary rivet.

The pedant in me can't resist.
It will be rather slower than an M3. It will however accelerate and decelerate more rapidly.
There, I feel better now

cd.thomson - 15/4/10 at 11:02 AM

the anti-pedant in me cant resist

that will be quicker round a track than an m3. the m3 will only be quicker on a long drag strip, so in general I would say the kit car is faster.

franky - 15/4/10 at 11:38 AM

Only if it's over a half mile long

Marcus - 15/4/10 at 11:45 AM

I think I'd leave the airbox as is. It will give a lot of people a scare, they won't have any idea what's in there. I love it

M3 won't have a faster time on the drag strip as ^^^ since that's an acceleration based sport over 1/4 mile.
Whether it's times are less on a track depends very much on the track (short+twisty vs long straights).

Quicker conventionally (and 100% of the time in the pub 'my car's quicker than yours' challenge) means top speed.

cd.thomson - 15/4/10 at 12:23 PM

much better traction in an m3 for the drag though.

unless we compare like with like my horse will always be faster than your pig is fit.

the only way we'll know is by racing them

franky - 15/4/10 at 03:13 PM

The m3 won't be better off the line as I've got a race logic traction and launch control system.
