I've seen a few vehicles just recently fitted with LED illuminated numberplates. The numberplates actually have the LED's built into the plate (Approx 6 each side)

A quick search on Google revealed these but they are quite expensive Anybody know of a cheaper source?

Why would you want to make them more visible to the Ol`bill.
just drill some perspex and insert the leds into the edges. That will make it glow.

I was thinking of having the plate in lights, you know like the stars do.. Now that would have been cool

i reckon some of that el glow wire would work well, cheap as chips now days too.
