Decided my car was too heavy......
pekwah1 - 28/8/10 at 06:20 AM

.......so i've gone down another route.

Say hello to my new car! Just need to sort out the drivetrain....

Thanks for the engine Jon!

Can't tell from the pic, is it mid engined...

You are going to need a long alternator belt on there!!

pekwah1 - 28/8/10 at 07:13 AM

yeh mid engine. may work on a new alternator location yet, not convinced about that one..... like you said, where will i get a belt from?

gavin174 - 28/8/10 at 07:16 AM

I wasn't sure if you had come up with a wind powered alternator that you could mount in the nosecone

pekwah1 - 28/8/10 at 07:23 AM

that's a good idea! wind alone might not do it though.... i'll attach a straw!

omega0684 - 28/8/10 at 07:27 AM

so what engine is going in its place??

pekwah1 - 28/8/10 at 07:29 AM

i'd love to say something impressive but that's potentially the one going in!

It's an old unloved 1600 xflow which i plan to strip down and learn a bit about engines from, and then probably replaced my hideously undersized 1300 xflow until i can find some money for a real engine!

steve m - 28/8/10 at 07:39 AM

So thats the one i missed ??

glad you got it !!

the heads are the same for 1300/1600 so dont bin yours

steve

pekwah1 - 28/8/10 at 07:40 AM

ahh, i was wondering if it was just the bottom end that's different...
Won't be binning mine, the 1300 will probably stay in for iva if it runs ok and i'll rebuild the 1600 in the meantime...

steve m - 28/8/10 at 07:41 AM

Ive also got a good book on rebuiling Xflow if you want to borrow it

pekwah1 - 28/8/10 at 07:42 AM

would that be mr wallace's book? jon who i got the engine from also has it... £99 from amazon is a little steep for my liking....!

steve m - 28/8/10 at 07:43 AM

I will dig it out, I cant remember !!
but its in the spare room somwhere

pekwah1 - 28/8/10 at 07:44 AM

cheers for the offer mate! should get my own really though, wouldn't want to return a book covered in oil and sweat and maybe some faeces..

steve m - 28/8/10 at 07:55 AM

Is your 1300 already in the car ?
as the 1600 is 1 3/4" higher, as i found out !!

pekwah1 - 28/8/10 at 07:57 AM

yes it is.
so the bottom end is bigger? i don't think it should make much difference, there seems to be plenty of clearance at the moment..

steve m - 28/8/10 at 08:02 AM

It should be ok then, as my car was built around a 1300 xflow, and i only had big problems when i dropped a 1600 in it
i had to lower the whole setup and change the rocker cover, as it would of been 4" through the bonnet

I now only have 4" ground clearance between sump and ground

so far its been ok !

snapper - 28/8/10 at 09:14 AM

1300 pistons in a 1600 block = more compression, therefore off to a good start.
I have a set off bike carbs that would be just right for your set up, will have them in my spares pile for a while, keep us all informed of progress.
Have a look on the Turbosports forum for good Xflow info

pekwah1 - 28/8/10 at 09:29 AM

what bike carbs have you got and will they go straight onto the xflow or will i need some kind of brakets/manifold?

snapper - 28/8/10 at 10:09 AM

You'll need a manifold, I bought them from someone on here a week ago but they are to small for my 2.1 Pinto but were bought for an Escort.
33mm rear outlet, immaculate as new condition, TPS fitted.
I am on holiday tomorrow morning, will be back in a couple of weeks.
