Cleaning a Pipercross foam filter

Unfortunately my filter is green and currently filthy.
Two little questions:

1) Can I just dunk it in petrol or is that fancy spray on cleaner needed?

2) How do you re-oil it afterwards?

Standard engine cleaner and a jetwash works well for me.

CRIKEY, tought that would have mullered a foam filter!

I have used hot water an bio washing powder. Leave in soak, rinse and job done. Do foams need oiling? thought it was just the cotton type.

I cleaned mine in petrol, then hot water with a little bit of washing up liquid, then rinsed it out and dried it, its the filter oil you can't realy get away without using the correct stuff, as its sticky stuff that bonds to the filter, and will not get stucked through into the inlet manifold, which could cause problems if oil gets onto the map sensor etc, the oil is only about £5, I bought mine off ebay.

^^^ Foam types normaly need oiling, (check with the manufacture, but ones that don't are probably rather rubbish at filtering) else they don't filter.

Wash it from the inside outwards, that drives the dirt particles out the way they came in.
Yes the proper filter oil is essential to make the filter work properly
