How long is a piece of string?
speedyxjs - 17/1/11 at 07:13 PM

Ok, iv been thinking over the last few weeks about the locost and i really dont have the time or money to finish it certainly this year and i dont have the room to leave it in the workshop for a whole year so i am considering selling it for a spridget/spitfire etc that me and the g/f can use in the summer and i can ahem...modify... in the winter

I know it a bit of a piece of string question but does anyone have any clue as to what a straight six locost would be worth. All it needs is a bonnet and some IVA proofing and possibly some tweeking to gain a bit more steering lock although, having driven it today, i think it might just about be ok.

I would think quite a lot more if you get it on the road before selling it

franky - 17/1/11 at 07:21 PM

I'm sure you're aware you'll get more selling it IVA'd.

designer - 17/1/11 at 07:25 PM

Ditto, worth twice as much if roadworthy

speedyxjs - 17/1/11 at 07:28 PM

Yeah i know that but i just dont have the time or money at the moment. work is at that point where it is busy but not busy enough to employ anyone to take some of the load off.

Daddylonglegs - 17/1/11 at 07:31 PM

Agree with the above.

Oh, and BTW, in answer to the thread title question......

.......twice as long as the distance from the middle to one end (+/- .01%)

Hellfire - 17/1/11 at 07:37 PM

I reckon scrap metal prices must be about £200 per tonne. On that basis and with the engine you've fitted, you'd probably get about £1,000

Seriously though, it'd be a real shame having got this far with your build only to sell it. You've got a responsibility as a Locostbuilder to finish it and get it IVA'd before you can even consider selling it.

Besides, I want to see if it will actually go round corners.......

lol

The costs to finish it i recon are:

Bonnet - £50 ish
Rubber trim and other IVA bits - £100 max
Trailer - £500
Tow car - £500 (would sell after though so should get whatever i paid back)
IVA - £580?
IVA retest (probably) - £80?
Registration, tax, plates etc - whatever that lot costs

That works out to at least £1500. I just cant see me having enough money this year to be able to justify spending that sort of money

Hellfire - 17/1/11 at 07:50 PM

Forget the trailer and tow car. Drive it to IVA and save yourself a grand.........

Phil

steve m - 17/1/11 at 07:51 PM

You dont NEED to buy a trailer,or a tow car borrow or hire one

Are you not allowed to drive to SVA now then ?

Steve

blakep82 - 17/1/11 at 07:52 PM

wait til you have got more money to finish it! easy. its not costing you anything sitting in the garage for the next few months.

steve m - 17/1/11 at 07:52 PM

See, we are thinking, and poor old in the dumps Speedy is not

Benzine - 17/1/11 at 07:53 PM

Yeah ditch buying a trailer and car, drive it or hire a car & trailer/ask if anyone has one you can borrow ^_^

blakep82 - 17/1/11 at 07:57 PM

you've not spent this mich time and effort on it to give up now

me and Ben (the other members of the Str8 6 crew) won't be happy!

speedyxjs - 17/1/11 at 08:17 PM

didn't think about hiring a car and trailer! I was going to drive it to IVA but then i found out the nearest test station it 80 miles away! Id hate to drive there and break down (knowing my luck) and lose the price of the IVA test.

It'll take more than a few months for me to save up that sort of money!

Il have a think and see if i could borrow the money from someone and look into hiring a car and trailer although that will only drop the total by a few hundred quid!

MakeEverything - 17/1/11 at 08:20 PM

I must admit mate, i doubt you would get £2k for it. A decent spridget would cost you anywhere from £2,500 upwards and will need some work. Cheapest option would be to get it through IVA by any means as cheap as possible by driving it to the test centre, then selling it if youre not happy with it. Complete, you should see £3k - £4k for a reasonable budget finish, and upwards of £4k for a concourse finish.

blakep82 - 17/1/11 at 08:20 PM

well, months, a year, whatever. if we all thought that when we bought our cars/chassis/pile of steel, then we'd never have got anywhere
GF's have a habit of losing all our money just means my car's going to take another bit longer than i hoped

Thats why you go with the support vehicle to carry tools, tow (if needed), and keep trim, bolts etc in case youre given an opportunity to finish bits for the test.

jollygreengiant - 17/1/11 at 08:28 PM

80 miles to the test centre, PIECE OF CAKE. IIRC I drove mine about 85 miles each way.

Ran like a DREAM. Got a bit wet on the way back but the smile on my face said EVERYTHING.

Oh and it WAS the first time it had turned a wheel.

edit bit :- Oh and no support vehicle just self belief, a small tool box and some rubber trim.

clairetoo - 17/1/11 at 08:50 PM

Worried about a 160 mile first drive ? Wot a wuss..............
I drove mine to the test center in Maidstone.............via Fisher's place...............and clocked nearly 400 miles on my first proper drive - got a bit of sunstroke/heat exhaustion due to it being a baking hot day

Logic says that since it will be worth far more finished and registered , you would have to be mad to sell it now

mangogrooveworkshop - 17/1/11 at 09:11 PM

you have an industrial area to run the car round to get it proven .......

Its this relationship thing thats done it......

Must admit it doesnt help and she has a hectic social life! Not complaining though. Just kind of lost one love and gained another

Liam - 18/1/11 at 04:57 PM

Just park the project till you have time.

I'll be coming up to 10 years before too long . Also partly due to courting==>marriage==>house renovation etc etc, moving jobs, all that...

I will never sell it! I WILL finish it.

One day!!

hughpinder - 18/1/11 at 05:33 PM

It seems a pity to sell up now - you can probably scrounge a tow car and trailer, so cost wise you're only talking about ca £700 to get it through IVA (you wont need tax/insurance to sell it as road legal).

I used to have a mk3 spitfire (25 years ago) and believe me, if you haven't got time to finish the 7, you won't have time to keep a spitfire in trim! Unless you really love cutting away rust...... You'd probably be better off going for an early mx5(eunos's seem especially good at not rusting) for £1500, supercharge/turbo it, nice wheels etc and then accidentally turn it into a donor in a couple of years.

Regards
Hugh

interestedparty - 18/1/11 at 08:11 PM

It's just the 90% blues. Leave it alone for a couple of weeks, then go in and give the workshop a really good tidy up, and you'll probably find you are ready to start again. If not leave it a bit longer. Selling it now would be insane.

m4maverick - 18/1/11 at 09:11 PM

Hi,
I am in East Grinstead, have a trailer and tow vehicle, am not far away and would be happy to help out for the cost of the diesel when you need to go to IVA.

Problem 1 solved I think.
Feel free to PM me if you want.

Ninehigh - 18/1/11 at 09:44 PM

Tell you what, if you have the bonnet already to be fitted I can do you some help...

If it's not done by the time I get down there I'll beat you to death with the rubber trim!

Seriously though it does sound like there's a couple of afternoon's work to be done, and I imagine you'd be better off asking for help to finish it and then decide not to sell it rather than sell what is effectively a heap of metal now.

nick205 - 18/1/11 at 09:59 PM

Speedy! Get it finished and road legal for 2 reasons (1) the value and (2) the accomplishment. Otherwise you'll get next to nothing for it and always wonder what could have been.
