Is that the proper way - to hold the rod at the end?

I thought it was best to feed it through your fingers?

I've never Tig welded anything, so I don't know, just heard/seen the above...

And I have a son in law who can do that ......




And I am encouraging him to start fabricating manifolds and exhausts for guys on here.




He is a complete petrol head, and will fit in great here. He currently works on a daily basis with stainless pipes from 2" to 36" in a paper mill.



And has his own tig

whatever gets the result i guess. perhaps for a beginner, holding the filler rod near the torch gives a steadier hand, but the moving the rod gets unsteady. maybe he's unusually steady, and finds he gets better reults by not changing his hand?

wish i could weld like that...

Don't worry about that Dave, that's because it gets hot at that end.

Getting good results is being comfortable before you start.

I'm lucky enough to work with 2 guys who are regarded as being some of the best around at what they do, industrial welding. Steve kindly Tigged up my dummy hybrid drive shafts and I was amazed at the results.

My next (selfish) task is to get a Tig and start practicing. Would love to be able to produce welds like you see on here sometimes...

Joe Welderman is a canny welder, and even though he doesn't know it yet, he'll be giving me some lessons sooner or later!!!

my tig work is not too bad but i have decided i need to build a much better welding bench that i can sit more comfortably at to do any better.

I watch this site for videos, he's entertaining and informative. That job looked average, I cut rods in two so they are easier to handle especially thin ones.

But did you note the state of his workbench at the very end of the video!

An amazing craftsman (but I have seen TrevD do something similar a few years back)
