Just about finished the basic chassis and as its stored at work, I get time to work on it weekends, after work and lunch breaks. its got quite A lot of attention and questions like "oh, your making a boat!" and im sick of "when will it be on the road?" and "do you think them rails are strong enough?" whatever stage your build , do you get asked sily questions?

JohnFol - 6/9/02 at 03:41 PM

The one comment that annoys me is "Oh, you're building a kit car"....
..."No, there is no kit, I'm cutting the chassis from lengths of steel .. ."
"So, what kit is it?"
"No . .. it's not a kit car. . .."

James - 6/9/02 at 04:04 PM

Yeah, people really can't seem to get their heads around not assembling a kit but building it from scratch. I have to explain I'm actually welding the chassis together myself almost every time!

James

theconrodkid - 6/9/02 at 04:05 PM

I built mine at werk and was allways being asked what it was, replys varied from a bbq, boat, airoplane, and finaly a gazebo.

Jon Ison - 6/9/02 at 05:26 PM

the "what kit is it" bugs me too.

Metal Hippy™ - 6/9/02 at 05:30 PM

The one that annoys me is...

'Why are you using a BMW engine and not a Ford or bike engine?'

Why not be different is what I'm yet to hear a satisfactory argument against

locodude - 6/9/02 at 07:04 PM

Yeah, very different!

Metal Hippy™ - 6/9/02 at 09:17 PM

Exactly, nutsack to the norm.

I'm trying to think of a half decent name to call the car.

I personally don't like 'Locost'.

Makes it sounds cheap and nasty to a lot of people. Can't be having that....

johnston - 6/9/02 at 09:19 PM

and.......

ITS BUILT BY NAZIS!!!!!!!!!!!

stephen_gusterson - 6/9/02 at 10:12 PM

well, anyone with a bike engined car if you follow your logic :

1. is built by the japanese that used brit slave labour in the war

2. jap bike parts have NEVER been cheap!!!!!

btw - i have noting against the japs - nice people and been there 4 times. The guys who set their spares prices and design nissans are exceptions

Metal Hippy™ - 6/9/02 at 10:32 PM

I don't class any of them as a satisfactory argument anyway.

Name a cheaply accessible 3.5 that isn't heavy?

It's got a decent standard power and torque output of 218 and 229 respectively.

Get them out of a bike or x flow engine with the same money.

Fuel guzzler... Who gives a f*ck? It's a sportscar isn't it? I ain't building no diesel 55-60mpg thing.

Expensive for parts... Maybe, but if you need the stuff you buy it whatever?

Built by Nazis...

Wrong decade, stupid argument.

So there.

stephen_gusterson - 7/9/02 at 12:34 AM

Hey hippy,

cant you wait 30 or 40 years, and use an Iraqi engine.............

apparently it would be nuclear powered

on a serious note - make sure you have a decent sized fule tank!

steve

Metal Hippy™ - 7/9/02 at 01:13 AM

Already thought of that one mate.

I was talking to Bob about it and I decided it would be great fun for 10 minutes at a time until the tank ran dry.

I reckon 15mpg is a fair estimate if we're caning it. 25-30 if we're being lightfooted and cruising (which is more likely gonna be how it's driven most).

Obviously we'd have to unleash the roar every now and again as we pass old ladies on the pavement...

johnston - 7/9/02 at 07:47 AM

hippy!!!!

an actually serious question

has the nazis built donor car got the gizmo that tells u how many mpg ur doin and if so are u uin it??????

locodude - 7/9/02 at 12:19 PM

Mr Johnston
You are a man after my own heart. As soon as these poor fools start to realise that buying German and Japenese has led to the wholesale destruction of our industries the sooner they will wake up and smell the tea (not coffee). Be patriotic, if you want a BEC at least put a Triumph engine in it! Either that or go the whole hog and fu*k of to Germany or Japan whichever your allegiences lie and build your car there!!!
Chris PTM
To know me is to love a bigot!

A Rover V8 with a Weber carb and cam change will get close to that, a 3.9 version will better those figures

Wadders - 7/9/02 at 12:51 PM

Know what, your right,i'm off into the garage right now to rip out the kawi lump,i'm sure iv'e got a BSA bantam engine stashed somewhere.
Mmmh the Yoko's had better go too, Oh and me shoei helmet. Tell ya what lets organise a Bonfire and burn the lot in protest.
Hey Chris the fuel from your Dellorto's should get the whole thing burning nicely!
(Don't forget Mussolini):.)

theconrodkid - 7/9/02 at 12:55 PM

I agree with locodude, not because i may be needing a fuel tank in the future, nothing is ENGLISH any more except TVR,remember pearl harbour i say!

locodude - 7/9/02 at 01:03 PM

Wadders
You see. All that jap crap you have there (apart from the helmet, they're great) it's the likes of you that has killed off our great Industrial production (ex bitter british steel worker here) and contributed to the demise of our once great country, England. (Note, this does not include Scotland, Ireland or Wales).
BTW he Italians capitulated to the germans before they were conquered, they never invaded anyone! Anyhoo they can be forgiven for producing articles of automotive sculpture (ferrari, Lamborghini et.al.).BTW if I was to fit a Jap engine then I would be right and the others would be wrong, It's called selective bigotry, as you'll find out if you're coming to Donnington (bring beer and meat). Hope you're not allergic to sarcasm!
Chris PTM

Wadders - 7/9/02 at 01:26 PM

Sarcasm wos that then?, some kind of fancy barbecue sauce? French i'll wager.
As for the italians not being guilty of invading anyone, who built all those fast straights round our way!!
Up Pompei pal

NONONONONONOOOOOOOOOOO

The Bantam engine is an East German DKW design, taken by BSA as war reparations!

ITS A KRAUT MOTOR!!!!

BTW

I had a Bantam D14 for a while in the 70s prior to my kawasaki kh250

steve

johnston - 7/9/02 at 05:27 PM

heres 1 i got asked when i was talkin bout it to one of others in work

"are u goin to drive it"

no i'm gonna use it as a paper weight

Metal Hippy™ - 7/9/02 at 06:18 PM

Mr Interested Party person...

Maybe a Rover V8 WILL get close to it or better it with the right treatment. So?

I take you back to my point about cost. I'm getting them as standard, not spending bucketloads getting there.

As for the 3.9 outdoing the figures...

No kidding, it's a bigger engine.

Wadders - 7/9/02 at 07:29 PM

The Bantam engine is an East German DKW design, taken by BSA as war reparations!

Fancy that, the sneaky buggers, don't worry its on the bonfire as we speak.
Anyhow iv'e decided to go the "twin" engine route...... i.e Norton 650. there, ya can't get no more british than that!
At least oil surge wont be a problem seeing as how most of it will end up on the garage floor

Dick Axtell - 8/9/02 at 04:50 PM

Oi - PTM!!

'Oo tort U 'istory? I'm just old enough to recall that the Ities invaded a British ally, namely Ethiopa (somewhere around 1940/41??).
And if I were building a JBA Falcon, I'd certainly be looking at a 325, or similar 6cyl donor, & bugger who built 'em (because by then its too late to worry).

Dick Axtell
(ex-British motor industry employee).

bass - 8/9/02 at 06:16 PM

steve gusterson, your 318 was built by germans that killed us in the war

locodude - 8/9/02 at 06:27 PM

Dear Mr Axtell
It's History as percieved by me. I ignore the bits that would hinder my arguments and render my wee taking null and void. The thing about this list is that you only need to have a small piece of bread on your hook and you're guarenteed a bite! Some people even believe that I mean some of my bigotted sarcastic comments. Normally the Jap and German loving, british industry destroying sons of bitches!
Chris PTM

scutter - 8/9/02 at 07:28 PM

I best be bringing british beef and beer to the BBQ or the shits really going to hit the fan!!!!!

locodude - 8/9/02 at 07:43 PM

I'm sure that with the over indulgence in alcohol and meat based products over the weekend the shit's going to be everywhere! I speak as a man of experience!!!

Yeah,i have fond memories of the shed load of meat and beer i consumed at stoneleigh, nearly got one of the horns out chris.Just the wiping of its a##e then.

Dazza - 28/9/02 at 01:52 PM

and back to the original question in this post, i say they are all kit cars, its only a term used to describe any car that is built by a person or people that is not a manufactured car!!! ie; if its a jago, a locost, an MK, a cobra, etc etc, if you have welded up the chassis or had it made for ya, who cares, all that matters is the work you put into it, 99% of people who ask DUMB questions have no idea what KITS are, and drive volvos(sorry Highcost). So some kits are kits, and some kits are not quite kits, but all builders use parts from other cars, so weather it came with planes and a chassis or you made most of it yaself, ITS A KIT CAR!!!!!

chrisg - 28/9/02 at 05:46 PM

Except "hot rods"

Try asking a rodder if it's a kit car!

I think it is BTW

Cheers

Chris
