I have an odd problem ....... (no - not that!)
I have a knock coming from the rear passenger side end of the axle when the car is rolling. It happens under power or when just free rolling down a
hill in neutral.
If I jack up the back of the car and turn the wheel by hand - nothing. There is nothing under the arch or rubbing the wheel/tyre. I've removed
the drum and everything inside looks fine. I've pulled the half shalf and the bearing turns smoothly. It's much worse when there is a
passenger in the car.
Any ideas???
does it increase/decrease depending on speed ? handbrake cable inside drum ? or is it a worn susspension bush, loose bolt? have you tried jacking up
the rear n running it ?
is it from the prop ? noises move about?
Jasper,
1; Have you tried jacking up the back. run it in gear, and check for wheel wobble? It could be that the halfshaft is bent
2; Check rear brake drums haven't gone 'oval'
3; Check the diff.
Let me know how the above go.

could be the prop hitting summat, jack the car under the diff and try again
Cheers chaps, I'll check all the above tomorrow and get back to you.
And yes Jon, it does increase with speed, as the wheels turn the knock increases proportionately.
The noise is defininately from the wheel end of the axle, not the prop, but I will check.
Well, I swapped the half shafts over and the knocking has stopped, still no better idea as to what it was though.
Cheers for the input.
Yuo sure you'd done all the wheel nuts up this time?
James
I once had a worrying knocking sound which turned out to be a loose wheelnut.
Ned.
YES
Glad its sorted Jasper!
Sooooo, what was it? half-shaft, or lose wheel nut?
