Which heater?
smart51 - 17/12/05 at 03:01 PM

I have fitted a Tifosi heater to my car which is worse than useless. The water flow though it is good and the fan blows air in the right direction, it's just that you can't feel any heat unless you put your hand right in front of the air outlets.

I expect to get my registration number this week and so don't want to wait until summer to drive my car and don't want to freeze either.

Can anyone recommend a heater that is good for use in a seven that has no roof or side screens.

Just a thought, is the air intake to the heater restricted? The one I used from SVC seems to be OK but needs a fair amount of air to be able to get into it to allow hot air out. I only fit the heater to demist the screen and always wear several layers in this weather.

No restriction to air flow either in or out.
I have been wearing4 or 5 layers but the wind still blows through them at speed. And my feet get cold. Can't wear two pairs of shoes.

Any recommendations for an effective heater?

In the past I've seen MGB and Moggy Minor heaters used.
The very early series 2/3 military flat type Landy heaters may be neat enough.
Are you sure the inlet and outlet pipes are both warm?or cold to determine if its the fan, heater or a car system fault.
Is your stat working OK?

The thermostat and cooling system works well. The pipes to and from my current heater get quite hot quite quickly, with the engine running faster than tickover. The air out of the heater does get warm, but not hot and there isn't much of it.

If the fan is working properly then the air should be getting warm if it is being blow through matrix . It may be worth taking the heater apart to check for foriegn objects blocking flow? It wouldn't be the first time a new part has been faulty. Have you spoken to Tifosi about it? worth a phone call It could save you the cost of a new heater. Can the heater be removed without disconnecting coolant pipes ? with heater held away from bodywork check for warm air? The fact that both heater pipes are hot would suggest little air flow through matrix which would make return hose cooler. . Possibly a partially blocked matrix in which case Tifosi should change it

The cover over the matix is riveted on and so it isn't possible to take it apart and put it back together "under warranty". It might be worth a call to Tifosi.

I recommend, a good set of thermals, extra jumper and decent outer gear!

BTW only a very short aeroscreen here, and into my second winter

I've taken to cover off the heater and discovered the problem - it's crap. The heater matrix is 50mm x 50mm x 160 - it is fitted in an over size box to fool you. The fan blows into the matrix on onside and straight into the box's cover, there is about 5mm clearange. the air then has to find a way around the matrix's mounts to get to the air pipe.

With the cover off, you get half decent air flow which you can just about feel 1/2 a metre away. Now if it were twice as good, it would be worth me making a proper cover for it.

I notice on the Tifosi wesite that they are now calling it a demister and fair enough it will be enough to demist a 7 windscreen. It isn't a heater though.

Anyone want to buy a nearly new demister?

I've used a mini heater, a bit bulky but it keeps my feet toasty - nice!

Cheers

If it was sold to you as a heater then surely you have a claim as it is not suitable for the purpose it was sold as . Get in touch with Tifosi
they have obviously had a problem with them .
Another possible donor for a smallish flat heater is the Reliant

vw polo heaters are small
easily removable fan/matrix from the scrappy, and leave all the vent gubbins behind you dont need it. no head under the dash gettin it out!

Ditto, Polo heater for me. I made a four hole flange to mount it to the scuttle and to connect demist/footwell pipes to. Pictures in my photo archive somewhere I think. HTH
