Building a Locost bike engined car
matt b - 15/4/03 at 09:41 AM

Hello all,

Im new to all this and I need all the help i can get. My dad owns a V8 westfield and he has really got me into this kit car game!

I would really like to build a bike engined car for as little money as possible so i have a few questions for you,

Basically whats the cheapest way(and I mean cheap lol) of doing this and whats the best bike engine to use?
+ How much more difficult & expensive would it be to add 2 bike engines?

Thank for all you help

Im not building a BEC but my experience and that of others on line shows that you realistically will spend around 2,500 quid to get a car built. Thats using a 'free' engine from a sierra or similar.

It costs 160 quid to get the ar thro sva alone - the costs mount up. If you cant rake up the cash over the period of your project you wont get far. The 250 quid is a myth.

Bike engines can be had for 800 quid upwards. Looking on ebay can give you some idea of what they go for.

Adding two engines isnt gonna go your cheap route, so thats a bit contradictory!

Don't worry mate, with even one bike engine it'll be quicker than your Dad's V8!!

From the very small amount I've read about it to fit two engines gives you a choice of two options: (1)difficult and expensive or (2) *really* difficult and quite expensive.
Choice one:
You get a choice of either two engines powering the rear axle (in which case you need a special 'gearbox' from someone like quaife- the expensive bit) to combine the two outputs into one propshaft.
Choice Two:
4x4 (The way Tiger have done it) with one engine powering the front and one powering the rear for which I believe you have to come up with some way of 'synching' the two engines to give the same output.

Just remember this- as a passenger in The Isonblade (single tuned 'Blade engine) we destroyed every other car we met on the track at Donnington except one turbo'd Hyabusa Dax.

All the best,

James

P.S. I may have it wrong (not the first time) and there is an easy/cheap way of fitting twin engines- in which case please say so if you know and I'll build one now!
