What's wrong with an avon?
matt.c - 11/6/06 at 09:54 PM

Sorry everyone, but i have to ask this question.
What problems do people have when building an avon? Was thinking of building one untill i heard of problems that every one has had.
My other choice is the MK which is a great kit but there is just something that makes me want an avon.

the bonnet doesnt fit....

having not had either all i can say is it seems a lot more people are building mk's, and seem generally very happy with them, so you have a lot of people in the same boat, which would mean any problems could be overcome easily by posting on here. on the other hand if you want to be different an avon is a good way to go.

pat? care to comment?

i've built an indy, so am biased, but of my kitcar friends that have built again, one's built a locost, the other a phoenix. both had avons to start with.

i crashed my indy, but i still got another one to replace it.

wrong length springs and uneven rear arches is just the start....

Don't get me started!

I would build the MK.

More bang for your buck, despite what Tiger says.

masssive flashlines in glassfibre, irs that does weird things, the list goes on

MK have the round/square rear/side panel joint against them, but that's about all major

It's a side step to help you get in the car.

I believe, to sum up some of the emotional but not terribly enlightening responses on here, as well as reading about Avons before, quality control at Tiger could be improved a tad! They seem to be following on From Dutton in the 'Pile 'em high and sell 'em cheap' phillosophy, but they aren't cheap when compared with the competition and from what I can understand, owners have had to fiddle & fit no end of bits to get a half-decent end product. Not very satifactory by any account

Oh dear lord.... here we go again!

I think it's such a shame all the bad press Avon get's. I think they are a cracking looking Kit and would have one at the drop of a hat if the quality was up to much.

There 'suggestions' policy (so I've heard) is a bit of a joke too. You make a suggestion, it get's heard - the reply is 'f*ck off, they're all like that' and it's tough!

Oh well...

Oh dear not so good then?

So the only problem with the avon is the body work?

Should not be a problem for me then because im a panel beater?

The MK to me is the best of the two but tiger are only up the road from me and it would be handy to be close for picking up parts etc

Just cant decide

I like the looks though:
http://tigersportscars.nl/dagboek.htm

Only i'm building by the book and tiger isn't nearby and i''ve heard they are not cheap (or is it sheep )

I simply think that if your having the skills to build one it doesn't matter which one you choose. My friend builded a Cat E1 and that sure looks fine to me.

You only need to make one or two trips.

For the difference in build hassle you'd be better with the longer journey....

oh, and it's the GRP that's the problem. Can you beat GRP panels?

Cheers,
James

It's not just the bodywork!!!!!!!!!!

scotty g - 13/6/06 at 08:16 AM

A friend of mine has a fantastic Avon but he has had to do countless improvements to make it so good. In addition to the bodywork problems, he found there wasn't enough leg room so made a whole new pedal set up. The top of the windscreen was right in his line of site so he made a taller one to see where he was going. The remote gear linkage system is utter garbage so he copied a wetfield item.
Shame though because i do think its a pretty little car

I believe that the kits are now supplied with the new Tiger gearbox linkage (pretty much a copy of the westfield one)
