I hate brake pipes!
David Jenkins - 29/5/03 at 07:48 AM

...just thought I'd share that with you.

Last weekend I filled up the system, and everything was fine apart from one of the rear brake cylinder connectors, which insists on leaking slightly.

I suspect that this was one of the first brake flares I ever made, and it shows... . Either that, or there's something trapped under the flare or the bleed valve. Either way, it's got to be stripped down.

The one thing I am glad about is that I chose to use DOT5 silicone brake fluid, otherwise I'd be repainting the brake backing plate this coming weekend...

...as it is, I think I'll have to make a new brake pipe...

The favorite trick is to make a good pipe, with good flares, offer it up to the car having made all the bends perfectly - and find you have put one of the unions on back to front.

I can usually get up to 13 unique, and different expletives out in one breath, its quite difficult normally, try it at home without rehersing!

Yeah that or the wrong bloody thread......

David Jenkins - 29/5/03 at 09:29 PM

Well, I think I fixed it this evening - had to replace the pipe (which was the one with the most complicated shape, of course ) - time will tell whether it's going to start dribbling again.

Trouble is, I lost a good cupful of my brake fluid over the floor! And yes - I did do all the things you're supposed to do, to avoid losing fluid (they didn't work). You can't clamp braided flexible pipes either. Oh yes - I also knocked over the jar I was using while bleeding the brakes. Argh!
Now I'm really glad I didn't use glycol-based brake fluid!

Cleaning the garage floor will have to wait until the weekend!

David

Cleaning the garage floor can wait til the cars on the road, mate!

I've just melted my tarmac drive (and some of North Yorshires paths) with a few pints of petrol, so beware!! Wifes chuffed...

Metal Hippy - 29/5/03 at 10:01 PM

I thought it was Rachel?

Or am I confused?

Or do you have 2 wives?

Or 1 wife and a mistress.

Or a wife and mistress and a donkey called George.

Not forgetting the sacrificial chicken and the virgin in a white dress.

And the token black man.

David Jenkins - 30/5/03 at 07:22 AM

I don't know what stuff you're on, Hippy, but I'll have some please!

David

Metal Hippy - 30/5/03 at 10:21 AM

Woo yay etc.

Life my friend.

Simply life.

I'm trying to bring happiness to one and all...

Yeah right. I had a bizarre moment of some kind...

Mark H - 30/5/03 at 10:22 AM

Metal Hippy, confused? That'll be the day! All of the options please...

Talking about Rachel, I was cleaning the loft out the other day with the wife.

All dusty, smelly and full of cobwebs. But she's good with the kids!

Anyhow, best dash before i get my head kicked in.

Mark

kingr - 30/5/03 at 10:29 AM

Forgive my stupidy but what difference would it have made if you'd spilt normal brake fluid on the floor as opposed to DOT5?

Kingr

kingr - 30/5/03 at 10:29 AM

Apart from that it cost you twice as much!

Apart from the cost? (the biggest issue!)

The fact that it doesn't strip paint off everything it touches. Also, it's not poisonous.

It's wierd stuff - EVERY ONE of my tools has a slippery greasy feel to them, even though I've wiped them several times.

Mark H - 30/5/03 at 10:55 AM

David jenkins tool has a slippery feel to it.

Metal Hippy - 30/5/03 at 11:05 AM

God damn, trust you...

timf - 30/5/03 at 11:07 AM

dave says he has more than one as well.

BTW

do all of the group who spend most of the 9-5 hrs on the list work in some way with computers and have nothing better to do all day long or is it just me.

Mark H - 30/5/03 at 11:18 AM

Its not just you mate!

Accountant, easy life, etc...

Metal Hippy - 30/5/03 at 11:19 AM

You're one of the worst offenders mate!

So nyah!

ned - 30/5/03 at 11:21 AM

Ned.

kingr - 30/5/03 at 01:48 PM

Yup, I'm one of the nothing to do computer people as well.

In fact I have so little to do, I actively choose not to read locostbuilders outside of office hours so that I have something to do at work!

ned - 30/5/03 at 03:10 PM

it's sad to say, but i know what you mean, just annoys me when i miss a good opportunity to add my 2p's worth (or a good buy on the for sale/wanted section!) over a weekend.

Ned.

theconrodkid - 30/5/03 at 04:28 PM

to get rid of brake fluid or wash your tool after use just use water

I've had no complaints...

Peteff - 30/5/03 at 07:42 PM

It's a bit less than 9 hours a day though. I tend to look a few times a day when I think about it. It's like PC World in our house so the wife and I have to take turns on the web, roll on broadband so we can leave it on all day. As for fu1 and fu2 and sticky tools the less said the better I think.

yours, Pete.

P.S. swarfega stings when it gets in your eye so don't use that.

robinbastd - 30/5/03 at 10:07 PM

Ned
So far your 2pence worth add up to £5.22. Not bad going, you'll pay for your kit in no time!

Its not one of those special tools you think you are gonna use a lot and it just ends up sitting there gathering cobwebs, is it?

...that sums up married life, doesn't it?

David Jenkins - 1/6/03 at 07:38 PM

After making a new brake pipe and frantically swapping it over, spilling loads of brake fluid everywhere (see rant above) - it still leaked!

Had another good look (as best I could considering it was the rear brake drum) and decided to change the bleed screw, which was a bit suspect at the seating face... leak cured! 5ml of brake fluid lost in the changeover!

Buggerit!
