I finally have started my project, well kinda’. I bought a Mig welder today with the sole intention of using it to build a Locost. Have lots of thinking to do before I actually start. Still must decide what components to use and how I am pull off building this at my parents house – I have no garage and no I haven’t told them yet.

I tried that...ended up moving to a house
with a sizeable garage.
(we were moving anyway but I cant believe my wife agreed)

There was a guy who lived in a terrace house who built his locost in his back garden, finished it to the point of being able to drive it and then dismantled it bit by bit and transfered it all through his house to the front. He then put it all back together and went off to SVA.

So theres always hope!!

Dont bother with a disposable Gas bottle. Get a pub size bottle. Argoshield is best (will have to rent that), or Pub CO2 bottle from your local friendly landlord is cheapest.

You will weld a lot better. (assuming this is your first go at welding).

Dont be afraid to turn up the power, the workpiece should be glowing red hot when you stop welding. (best advice I had)

Practice plenty on scrap first!.

You will get loads of help and advice on here.
So dont be afraid to ask.
and
Use the Search / archives, as most things have been done by someone on here at one time or another.

Good luck.. and enjoy your build... You will enjoy driving it even more.

When its on the road... the best bit is telling people you built it ALL including the chassis.

im building mine in the terrace of my parents' house! had to tell them what it was when it started to look like a chassis and occupied all the space in the terrace

I just bought my MIG two days ago! 125amp Clarke unit. (120v for our stateside electrics)

I plan to first build a 4-wheeled pedal car out of 2 bikes, and also some garden arbors and sculptures.

Once I get good, I'll add a gas bottle and regulator and start the chassis!
