camping gear (for stoneleigh)
ned - 6/2/07 at 08:22 PM

ok so I'm thinking ahead, but remembering what I did (or rather didn't have) last year I'm trying to start sorting out some bits and pieces.

borrowed some lilo's last year but need to get a decent roll matt, anyone used these sell inflating jobbies and found any good prices, "thermarest" ones seem quite steep, found some under the brand of "stormlite" which are a bit more reasonable but still £35 for a 2" thick one.

robocog had some excellent gel reusable "click" hand warmers which were brilliant but I've not found any cheap online yet after a bit of googling.

I will have to get a maglite and possibly a fleece liner for my sleeping bag but what else might be worth getting? got tent, sleeping bag, clothes, boots and some chairs (which last year I bloody forgot!)

Ned.

TimC - 6/2/07 at 08:27 PM

That looks pretty equipped to me although I had the benefit of being with a couple of guys with caravan & camper so had gas etc etc

Most important thing for me this year is decent boots. I got fed-up of having wet feet!

graememk - 6/2/07 at 08:30 PM

and how do you get all that in a seven ?

stevec - 6/2/07 at 08:43 PM

I only live 4 miles away so I am going to get her indoors to deliver all my stuff to the gate.

Steve.

martyn_16v - 6/2/07 at 08:44 PM

I've got a thermarest mat, they're the dogs danglies. We got them from Millets, girlie gets a decent discount there from girl guiding

ned - 6/2/07 at 08:52 PM

Martyn,

Do you know what model or at least thickness when inflated?

martyn_16v - 6/2/07 at 09:12 PM

We've got the Trail 3 - looks to have been renamed/about equivalent to Trail Lite now

UncleFista - 6/2/07 at 09:21 PM

The "click" handwarmers are available from Tesco for a fiver a pair, dunno what price you've seen them at..

MkIndy7 - 6/2/07 at 09:28 PM

NO , Didn't stay the night at Donnington, and Newark was warm. Coventry airport is just up the road from Stoneleigh IIRC

Seconded, got one myself a few years ago, though doesn't work quite so well with hot rock burns in it lol

owelly - 6/2/07 at 10:55 PM

For chilly nights, I can recommend a divers wooly bear. I had a fleecy one (oooer misus) but then got a thinsulate one. The're also good for driving on chilly days!

bob - 6/2/07 at 11:29 PM

After years of taking tent cooker cold box cooking utensils kettle food milk cutlery BIG sleeping bag heater lights

Then in the seven

toilet roll tooth brush beer money

SixedUp - 7/2/07 at 12:43 AM

God that sounds grim. You've got me thinking hotel room, taxi's and mastercard... :-)
Cheers
Richard

mark chandler - 7/2/07 at 12:45 AM

Ned,

You just need a warm women, she will sort out all the details and make sure you do not get cold !

I,ve never known one to suffer the cold, but then again they have always booked hotels or pubs for the night.

Regards Mark

More of a manly shape!

Stuart Walker - 7/2/07 at 02:50 AM

Thermarests are expensive, I have one of the Coleman mats for running... A bit lighter because of the shape and loads cheaper, eg. here:

"GO" Outdoors

Or if you REALLY don't want to spoil the power/weight, try a balloon bed... Although they do tend to burst. A lot.

Cheers,
Stu

thirded. will need to look at the details but these come in various thickness and lengths; I wouldn;t recommend you get the 3/4 lenght one, go for full size.

I think mine is the thinnest too and comfortable enough.

there are at least 3 or 4 brands; you pay more for the named bran therma-mat or therma-rest; one of these has a brass valve that looks like it will last longer than the plastic valves.

you need to get the outdoor shoppe catalogue to check weights if that is impoartant to you.

you can get them to roll up much smaller than the mats, squeeze the air out then suck out the rest so it is like vacuum packed.

As some one who camps reasonably regally my top tips are as follows

Pack all bedding in one compression bag i.e. sleeping bag, fleece liner and camping pillow or 2 (take the liner out come the summer if you wish)

Also camping in a 7 or other small car is a great laugh on top of beading above the minimum I have ever taken is. Gortex bivi bag, hammock, fly sheet and load of string, that’s the accommodation sorted all in a second compression sack. Cooking stuff and some food and that’s about it.

shortie - 7/2/07 at 08:17 AM

Right,

Short's palace should once again be adorning the MK area at Stonleigh, we felt we could do with a little more space last year so we have added an extra annexe to the tent to use as a bathroomtoilet

We have also purchased a new improved large frying pan which is enamel so should be more durable and stick less!

All the normal kit will be available including cooker, utensils, kettle, large frying pan, gas heater, fridge (essential for the beer of course!!), gazeebo (I think we now have three!) and anything else we can fit in the car, actually sod it, we'll bring the trailer!

Should be a good weekend!!

Rxx

scutter - 7/2/07 at 09:21 AM

Rich, you mean I don't have to bring a gazeebo this year, outstanding more room for shopping.

Sorry for those wanting to take the p*** but the pink tent will not be making an apperance this year.

I am liking the price of the coleman mats though.
ATB Dan.

They've got a hotel on site. Sounds the best option to me!

Cheers,
Syd.

Also, there's cheap accommodation on site that the stockmen use for the Royal Agricultural Show (or whatever it's called). The showers are sometimes hot as well, and open 24hrs.

yep there is a travel lodge type thing right in the middle, but i would book now as i made an enquire nearer april and it was full.

Normaly traders fil it up i would think.

ned - 7/2/07 at 10:53 AM

is the 70D bit on the spec the weight of the fabric ie weight of material and/or desnity of weave? the colemans and some other cheaper ones are 70D whereas the thermarest, thermalite etc are 150D.

ps just found this one that looks like a bargain:

"Mark you must have been watching us for the last few years at these shows,it works for me but sadly it didnt work for stevem one yea"

the green tent, year ???? perchance

Marcus, we have witnessed what you can get in your 7, with Roland, and yes it defies logic, did you make a tardis ?

the carpeted porch area, and matching wardrobes, was a bit excessive

lol
