does anyone know the size of the drive pinion shim for mk 2 escort

The shim behind the pinion is used to set the tooth contact area so it may come in differant sizes. I've got a couple at the workshop which I'll measure today if I remember.

Hi the shim is a crushable spacer for setting the preload on the pinion bearings only. So for a rebuild or kneeds to be a new one and assembeld to give the correct preload on the pinion. If rebuilt with the incorrect preload it will cause problems later with the mesh of the pinion and crownwheel.

The contact/mesh adjustment is done by adjusting the crownwheel bearings.

I'm not a naturally disagreeable kind of person but the tooth contact is definetly set by the shim between the pinion gear and the rear pinion bearing. The backlash is adjusted by altering the crown wheel bearings.

What he^^^^ said is quite true but i've never come across a diff with on in yet. It sets the fore and aft meshhing of the gears whereas the cw movement is really only for setting the backlash. And yes the preloads are set with the collapsible spacer.

The ring / spacer / washer / shim. Is ussually 47ish mm OD. 31ish mm ID and 2.5-3.5 ish mm thick. When fitted.
