Building a kitchen unit with IKEA instructions or building a car from Uncle Ron's book?

Wouldn't buy anything from Ikea, but I would buy a book by RC, so I vote the latter

I suspect you're about to find out I was right

If you need the instructions for a shelf unit don't even think of building a car

I think I've made a terrible mistake.

Some IKEA stuff is very good, some is borderline shoddy. All of it is trivial to make using the instructions.

Best idea is to go around the store just before they do the refit with new ranges - easy to tell the stuff that survives well.

I thought this was a semi joke poll at first so didn't bother adding a comment - but...

Last year I bought my first house (yes I know it's a bit late at 30 but still...) and because it was first house I was obviously totally skint when moving in.

I went round all of the named kitchen builder/suppliers that you can think of and the second cheapest was MFI at £1850ish for units alone (thats inc there 25% discount) they also wanted £500 for a 5 year guarantee.

Ikea was £1580ish and that included a nice fridge freezer, cooker (middle of their range) hob (also middle) and hood (also middle)! I then asked as to what guarantee etc and was told that Ikea have a standard (no charge) 10 year gurantee.

Just goes to show what faith they have in their own stuff..

It took about a day to fit the entire kitchen myself (Dad steadied the worktops etc when cutting) but it really was that simple. Only used the destructions first page to make sure all the stuff was present and then cracked on - they really were that simple!!

You haven't tried Ikea Furniture have you! The car will be easier.

if your not sure about welding then buy a chassis.

I normally whip together Ikea furnitiure but recently had the misfortune to install one of their dishwashers.
Bloody thing was full depth (leaving no space behind for water or drainage pipes) and then they didn't sell a door of the right width (or if they did they sold the person who I was installing it for the wrong one) meaning I had to cut and shut the whole shebang like nobody's buisness!!

I'd ask which takes longer

a. Building a car

b. Returning faulty kitchen units to Ikea.
