What Have I Got?
oldmanmille - 19/6/07 at 07:15 AM

I bought this and to be honest I don't know what I have got

It has a full cage welded in and I havent seen anything like this one on any of the pics on this site!

Running a 1.8 Zetec bottom end with 2.0 head, all been refurbished and am told running approx 150bhp - does that sound right?

Type 9 gerabox - whatever that is! Avo's all round, new discs, calipers, goodridge lines. Alloy baffled tank. New wiring loom. New fibreglass bodywork. Carbon look dash.

The back axle is one that is apparently used in the 750 class racing - is this special or just ordinary?

Obviously it aint finished and I need to start getting it finished but I would like to know what it is exactly

Thanks for any advice, comments, or whatever you choose to print

John

And maybe a few pics would help

RazMan - 19/6/07 at 07:19 AM

They would indeed

oldmanmille - 19/6/07 at 07:22 AM

There you go...

If it takes as long as me posting these pics then maybe I should give up now

Ahhhh, you meant uploading.

TimC - 19/6/07 at 08:12 AM

I can't tell you who made it but I can tell you that they've put some thought into it. You appear to have brackets for the radiator, for the front bodywork an a rear stay for a headrest. I'd imagine that they'd originally intended to race it?

oldmanmille - 19/6/07 at 08:19 AM

Yes they did apparently. is it worth finishing off?

Im concerned that I dont have the level of expertise to be honest but always wanted to have a go and the opportunity arose!

What would anyone do about the engine - leave the EFI or bin it and start with something else?

It doesnt have a propshaft - who would I go to for this?

Sorry for all the q's but I'm hoping you can assist!

Cheers....

oldmanmille - 19/6/07 at 08:22 AM

Just a couple more....

Peteff - 19/6/07 at 08:37 AM

You'll not be able to see past the standard efi . A set of carbs and megajolt or throttle bodies and megasquirt is the usual route.

TimC - 19/6/07 at 08:41 AM

Yes, I'd say it was well worth finishing.
It's not a Luego is it folks?

The propshaft is an easy fix. You can either source an old one and have it modified (most of the kit manufacturers will be able to help) or you could buy new from someone like Dunning & Fairbank - probably £200ish.

I'm no zetec expert but there's plenty here.....

millemg - 19/6/07 at 08:47 AM

Are you a "Mille" man too ?

BKLOCO - 19/6/07 at 09:04 AM

Where abouts in this fine country are you John?
You will certainly get loads of help from this site but If you are unsure how to proceed then maybe someone popping in to cast an eye over the beast might be the way to go.

oldmanmille - 19/6/07 at 09:19 AM

Yes millemg...

And, I'm in Runcorn, cheshire....

Thanks,
John

BenB - 19/6/07 at 09:36 AM

I'd ditch the standard plenum as it'll poke through the bonnet.. They keep it on the Avon but it doesn't look very nice IMHO...

Looks quite tidy otherwise... Shouldn't be that difficult to finish. It looks like all the welding is done and that's often the limiting factor. The rest of the build is just bolting things together and asking questions on here when you're stuck

oldmanmille - 19/6/07 at 09:54 AM

thanks Benb

big_wasa - 19/6/07 at 03:13 PM

With that inlet setup max power would be more like 105-130 bhp depending on model.

Carbs/ throttle boddies and an after market ecu would give you an easy 150 bhp.

Nothing like my Luego chassis although mine has an IRS . The welding doesn't look bad on the chassis , much better than the engine mountings.

Hi John, welcome to the nuthouse.
It's definately worth the effort to finish it, try and get a ride with someone, and you'll get the idea!
Regarding the engine, wang it in the nearest canal and fit a nice bike engine

(someone was bound to say this sooner or later, might as well be me for a change)

Al.

Macbeast - 19/6/07 at 06:19 PM

Go for it! If not, I'll have it

Any kit car magazine will have advertisments from people who make propshafts.

You've got a solid rear axle, so I would guess from an Escort, if it has Ford somewhere on the casting.

Type 9 gearbox is 5-speed job as used in Ford Sierras and pretty much the standard for kit cars.

I would keep the EFI initially if you have the electronics as presumably it worked on that engine - I always try to start from something that works before making changes.

Good luck

Your wheels are the wrong colour

And you want an engine like this

You must have a really friendly landlord, letting you use the taproom as a workshop
And whats that growing in the corner?

Yeah the R is nice and your engine is even nicer

I haven't got the Mille anymore after binning it (big high side) at Donny. Went on to an ex Manx GP CBR600 after that but now sold that after fracturing my spine earler this year.

Now on 4 wheels with this:

But want a bit more power so thought I would try my hand at this Locost instead of trying to wring more power out of the golf!
