Shift lights - what to set them to?
David Jenkins - 23/6/07 at 03:25 PM

I'm in the process of wiring up shift lights for my Megajolt - I was just wondering what the 'traditional' settings were for these things.

I have 3 green, 1 yellow and 1 red. Obviously, red comes on when the engine's within a couple of hundred rpm of the rev limiter (rev limit 6300, so red light at 6100).

When should I start the sequence with the first green? 5000? 5500? Count back with 200rpm spacing between lights?

What do people normally do?

cheers,
David

Depends how quickly your engine revs. The first ones are basically just like a 'get ready' warning IMO. So depends how long you need to react

My shift light is adjustable in intervals of 50rpm from 50-200rpm between lights

As flak said depends how quick your engine revs. In my case set at the maximum 200rpm intervals they almost all come on at once

You set them using a rolling road or dyno, to keep the engine running in its best rev range.

I'm not going to spend £100 - £200 just to get my shift lights working OK!

Only joking - for the time being I'm going to count back from max revs and see how it works. This is the well-known 'poke and hope' principle!
