I brought a clarke 3 ton, high lift jack last week and when i went to use it today, it gave way and the car fell off

Some piccys:

Bent Jack
Bent Jack

Bent Jack 2
Bent Jack 2

Bent Jack 3
Bent Jack 3

and the gap left between the car and the house

Gap between house and car
Gap between house and car

Gap between house and car 2
Gap between house and car 2

Could have been a lot worse. Do now i contact clarke or machine mart (where i brought it) and have a few words?

blakep82 - 11/8/07 at 11:58 AM

i'd go back to machine mart

meany - 11/8/07 at 12:03 PM

go stright back to the same machine mart you got it from.
insist on your money back,
insist they withdraw them now,
and get onto their head office and lodge a complaint..these should be tested.

DONT have a go at the guys in the shop, its not their fault.

"Vent it out" on Machine mart head office.

i work in retail, this is the best way to do it in my opinion.

Machine Mart is Clarke.

Has the jack collapsed or twisted?
If the way/direction the jack was used was incorrect and the car was inclined to move once lifted then it may have placed twisting forces that it is not designed to cope with.
Hypothetically, if you used it under a car on a hill and lifted the rear braked wheel(s) off the ground, the car would tend to run away and place sideways force on the jackand twist or tip it over I guess? Just a thought.

And no, I'm not defending the jack or machine mart, just pondering why it could happen.
My jack is a real cheap one but looks exactly the same design and I've had no problem, but then again I've never lifted a Jag with it
Hope you get a good outcome

speedyxjs - 11/8/07 at 12:47 PM

Its twisted. it was on a level driveway and the jack was lifting from the middle of the car.

rusty nuts - 11/8/07 at 12:58 PM

Had it happen to one of Clarks folding engine cranes a few years ago as well!

locogeoff - 11/8/07 at 02:46 PM

I would second the point of not having a go at the guys in the shop, they didn't make them and they sell them in good faith that the product is tested and up to the job. I've had reason to take an item back to them and the bloke said that he'd replace the item because of the attitude I approached them with the situation.

This failure is a reminder to us all that you shouldn't work underneath a car supported by a jack

there's no guaratees that this won't happen to axles stands either though

martyn_16v - 11/8/07 at 03:33 PM

I always sling the wheels under the car when it's jacked up and and on axle stands, I get a bit paranoid about working underneath cars. I always try and keep my head clear, can be a right pain when what you're working on is in the middle of the car

Fatgadget - 11/8/07 at 03:36 PM

The construction of that jack looks decidedly flimsy to me. You get what you pay for I guess.

Confused but excited. - 11/8/07 at 04:11 PM

I'd report it to Trading Standards as a public safety issue.
