Which car?
Simon - 9/2/08 at 06:48 PM

Still needing a new car and can't make up my mind what to go for. The car doesn't need to be fun (that car is in the garage!). It needs 7 seats, manual box and diesel.

Have driven the Grand Espace (and quite liked it). Looked, but not been, in the Galaxy (instruments reminded me of a Mk3 Cortina (which I don't like)). The Espace doesn't seem as cluttered as Galaxy. Seats fold into floor in Galaxy (but won't be taking them out often).

One of my fathers friends has had, and liked, them both.

What do you reckon?

No, I'm not considering any other MPV.

espace is probably by a long way the most comfortable. Easy to drive and roomier. The Galaxy would have stiffer ride/better handling but not as comfortable and feel cheaper as well. If buying used the galaxy will hold its value more. Espace depreiciate by the minute! Will proabably have to visit the dealer regularly with both but more so with the Espace. I would go for the Espace.

IMHO I would steer clear of anything French, so as there's only two it would be the Ford. (Neither if I was choosing for myself).

Ford - better built and will retain more of its value when reselling.

I too would pick neither but then I'm not handing out the money.

neither, I'd top myself if I had to own a people carrier, in fact that sounds a very good reason not to have kids, I'll have to remember that

bigrich - 9/2/08 at 07:30 PM

not a fan of the renault and seen too many tatty galaxys/sharans so would'nt go there either Sorry

Simon - 9/2/08 at 07:33 PM

Three year values according to Parkers (prices are list, target and 3 year)

French cars crap? I had a Picasso and while it was incredibly dull it never broke and always did what it said on the tin. Renaut developed the Espace with Nissan!

Galaxy 2.0 TDCi Zetec 5d £22,995 £18,796 £9,870

Espace 2.0 dCi Dynamique 5d £26,300 £23,650 - £9,897

I owned both but it were older types.
The ford is a good car (for a MPV) much better ride then the espace
I drove the Galaxy into a canal (slippery roads) but I cleaned it and it kept going.
So I was very pleased with the Ford.
The Renault is really bad, gearbox broken and a bad ride, very week (or how do you say that).
The only advantage of the renault was the aircon.

Have to agree with BT , the Kia is well worth looking at. Both the cars you have mentioned have their faults but I do hate working on the Espace! with a bit of thought they could have made it impossible instead of horrible

carpmart - 9/2/08 at 11:03 PM

Ford over Renault every day!

NigeEss - 9/2/08 at 11:26 PM

I'm with Mr Whippy on this one

Well, there's me (1), the wife (2) and the two boys (4). Occasionally I have to take mother (5) or mother in law (5)(sometimes both (6)) and then there's my bro in Lux (7) who visits occasionally so he needs to come too.

Just so happens that the ZT is a bit tight.

Still sort of a Fordish, for a bit anyway, Volvo V70 with 7 seats.

I've got 2 kids and MPVs are not for me, in fact I couldn't bring myself to buy a car with 4 doors, but if thats what you need I'd imagine the Galaxy would be a better bet on running costs alone...

Had a couple of renaults and they were both not that reliable and parts are incredibly expensive. Clio 172 cost more to run over 4 years from new than my Alfa GTV3.0 or my wifes BMW325Ci

At least ford parts and servicing is cheap.

Why not just hire one on the odd occasion when you need all 6 seats? Just a thought!

Simon - 10/2/08 at 07:10 PM

The other purpose is to save money - fuel/insurance/tyres and servicing costs saved will pay for the new car!

More money for Deimos then
