Electrifying a bicycle

Chaps,
I'm toying with the idea of electrifying a mountain bike, so I don't have to use the pedals
Now, from what I gather the law states that only 200 watts is allowed (250/tandem) for pedal assist. However, we don't want to worry about that
now do we Off road use only
So what are you suggestions for motor (about 500 - 750 watts and what voltage/amperage), battery and throttle control.
Range needed approx 10 miles at most, though I'll pedal if I have to!. Performance is the thing here
No hub kits, way too expensive.
Last thing, if I can build a car for £250, this has to be done on a propotionately cheaper cost!

Car battery, rated 60 amp-hours, which I take to mean 1 amp for 60 hours or 60 amps for 1 hour?
750 watt motor, 12 volts = approx 60 amps.
So lug a car battery + 12v 750 watt motor (is that 1 horse power?) around and maybe it'll provide enough oomph to save you pedalling for up to 1
hour. As long as you maintain 10mph, that = 10 miles

Hi
Try my method.
1x 2kw 12v motor
1x 18inch model plane propeller.
1x crude fan guard.
Weld the fan unit to the back.
mount one 20AH battery.
The only problem I had, was that every one in the street stopped to look for a light aircraft tracking off.
Scary with a 18" prop doing 6000rpm 10" from ya butt.
Just wish I had a video camara back then.

Sod that...this is the jet age....
Get a pair of model gas turbines and strap them to the bike...
Or if you are feeling adventurous...get a model helicopter turboshaft engine...they do those up to about 7.5hp.....although you would deafen and burn

Petrol engine donors are plentiful and cheap, the same can't be said for electric ones! Speed controllers and decent batteries are also not
cheap items.
The motor from an electric wheelchair/invalid carriage will be about the power you are looking for. Alternatively suitable motors are available from
the cheap electric scooters that China is exporting, something like
this should be usable, though I think something around the 200-300 Watt range would probably be adequate. You can buy a complete,
brand new (low power)electric scooter for
forty quid!
Might be worth a look on the Fighting Robots (a.k.a Robot Wars) forums as they tend to use some
pretty hefty motors and the associated speed controllers and batteries, so should be able to recommend a supplier or maybe even have something for
sale.

Yep, I thinking along mobility scooters at the mo.
A friend may have a motor, controller and battery. Given these things weigh quite a bit and can do 8mph, I figure lighter weight, better gearing and
"jobsagood'un" as they say
