We should all have a extinguisher......
matt.c - 8/9/08 at 10:03 PM

After the misfortune of one of our members car i really think we should have something like this..

Ok its weighs a few kilo's but is it really worth loosing everything for a little bit of weight?

A group buy?

My thoughts go out to builder who lost there car in a fire.

was thinking this myself...

er, do us a favour, change the title to something that stands out more to the extinguisher, otherwise some may just pass it by. if it says it in the title, it may prompt people to think about it

Would that really have saved the gentleman's car in question?...

Lets face it, most fires will be fuel/electrical combined....if its in the tunnel you stand no chance of getting the extinguisher onto the flames.....

The firebrigaed made a point that a large portion of people hurt in fires are hurt because they tried to tackle the blaze themselves with a hand held appliance

I will be fitting an extinguisher to my car, but I will be too busy running to use it!!!

I have one even though the regulations for speed events don't require a plumbed in system. AFFF is a sad substitute for the now banned Halon/BCF systems.

I've seen enough burned out cars to now how quickly these things happen!

I think the one pictured at the top of the screen is fixed to the car and when you pull the lever it extinguishes the fire from multiple jets placed around the car. You could have for example one in the engine bay, one in the tunnel, one over the fuel tank and one in the cockpit.

Well worth the money, I may be interested if the price is right. (Times are hard).

I've got one in the footwell for my car most of the time but it's mostly so that if there's a small fire I can try and put it out, anything too big and I'll just sit by the side of the road and plan what I'm going to build with the insurance money whilst waiting for the fire engines to turn up....

24vseven - 8/9/08 at 11:05 PM

we have a zero360 in the rally car it has 6 jets placed around the car and its just pull a lever and it does the rest while you run in the other direction as pointed out previously these could be placed at likly causes of fire or inacssesable places
they cost around 400-500 for real decent systems but to most thats a fraction of what we have in the cars

Fozzie - 8/9/08 at 11:27 PM

I have mentioned this quite a few times.......

But the plumbed in variety.......

http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/viewthread.php?tid=87239

It may not have stopped a (flowing back) tunnel fire.

Pulling the lever on the dash board/rear quarter then legging it, whilst waiting for the fire crew would have given at least some sort of chance......

Me too if price is right, going for the 2.25kg MSA or 4kg FIA model?

Syd Bridge - 9/9/08 at 08:51 AM

Add to the extinguisher, a coat of intumescent gel on the inside of the bonnet and other mouldings, would have helped avoid the bad damage, by giving time to do something yourself.

A little more cost, but very little in the great scheme of things.

Cheers,
Syd.

SPARCO FIRE EATER

I've mentioned these before but I've read a post on another forum where this device was used successfully on a car fire. Pull the tab and like a flare the stick consumes itself while released lots of gases to smother the fire.

Not cheap but if you can find one they are very light and compact.

Or perhaps walk around to the other side

While probably/possibly not something to economise on it's worth noting Aldi are selling 1kg car extinguishers from Sunday for £6.99 which is better than not having anything.

Lidl's have a dirt cheap one, although cheap and crappy, it might save you a couple of grand !!!!!
