Things That Scots Have Given The World
TGR-ECOSSE - 17/4/07 at 10:51 PM

I have noticed that there are a few Scottish people on here and thought would share with you some things that we Scots have done for the world (I bet you will come up with a few more)

Macbeast - 18/4/07 at 02:20 AM

Several wars - Tony Blair

Destroyed pension system and sold off Britain's gold at historically-low price - Gordon Brown

Re-introduced imprisonment without trial - John Reid

Repositioned personal, professional and collective responsibility on principle of " Please Miss, it wisnae me " - all of the above.

Even inventing suspenders can't make up for logarithms and traffic cones.

How much of that stuff was actually done in Scotland?

smart51 - 18/4/07 at 06:55 AM

Deep fried mars bars. Shhh, don't suggest you can deep fry whiskey or there'll be disaster.

ecosse - 18/4/07 at 07:51 AM

How about this one

"Sir William Fairbairn (1789 - 1874) was born in Kelso, in southern Scotland. An engineer, he developed the idea of using tubular steel, which was much stronger than solid steel, as a construction material"

Where would Colin Chapman have been without this guy then?
(Tongue firmly in cheek for the humourless among us )

Cheers

Macbeast we are sorry about Blair et al. but you lot did elect them! If you English can't find anyone good enough to lead the country. . . . . . . . .

RK since Dolly the sheep the same team have been eusy cloning all sorts of other animals but I believe they turned down a labour party request to clone Tony Blair

Other things invented here were a substantial number of developments in hard Disk and memory technology, the first computer using light instead of electricity, and the principles of the Trinitron single gun colour tube, unfortunately all the credit has gone to foreign companies who paid for development to product status rather than the inventors in Scotland.

One thing that doesn't seem to have been claimed by the Scots is the Union of the Scotish and English crowns

Yeah. I seem to recall from history lessons that the English throne was inherited by the king of Scotland and that it was his idea to be given the title Magnus Britannia - King of Britain. The likes of Alex Salmond have bleated about it ever since. Even the British parliament has twice the number of Scottish MPs per person than English Welsh or Irish, as a direct result of the merger between the English and Welsh Parliaments; and they have a disproportionate number of Scots in the Cabinet.

To listen to "Scotland" on the news, youd think that England had invaded, defeated and conqured Scotland. You'd never guess the truth.

Perhaps this thread is not about all the things the Scots have given the world.
