I'm thinking about painting my cylinder heads/block/sump, what sort of paint would be suitable? I want a nice finish, so nothing that has to be applied with a paint brish :] What about powder coating?

I've had good results with Hammerite smooth. (spray on) It can take the heat and has a good finish.

You used to be able to buy engine enamel at good motorist type shops, Used with a brush onto a clean surface finish was pretty good. Can't remember who made it though I brought some about 5 years ago . Seems to last better than Smoothrite.

Just remembered engine enamel was made by Hermatite (I think)

Same here, i had some bright yellow enamel, brush on type, and it lasted years, never discoloured with the heat, or chipped off as long as the suface was really clean first.

Can find it anymore in shops, but i found the next best thing, spray enamel, just done my block, oil pump housing, and front hubs.

Looks the mutts doo dahs.

We got some engine enamel from whats now WilcoMotorsave,
its in a blue tin and came in red, black, blue, yellow, and maybe even green, was plenty of colours anyway.

Sorry can't remember who makes it, don't think it was any great name but has been fine for 2+years.

We also used High Temperature spraypaint on the alternator and starter etc just incase, better to do it only 1ce!

Can hammerite (tinned) be thinned and sprayed? I thought if you've got access to a compressor/spray gun you might as well use it, and it would be cheaper.

Finnegans do their own thinners but you could try synthetic thinners in it as it would be cheaper.

Always found Frosts to be a bit expensive

Hammerite can be thined and sprayed.

PJ15 engine paint IIRC is what i used on all of my bike engines. Spray on excellent finish. dont powder coat them.

Do you need to use primer first with engine enamel? Or just spray it on?

Never used primer when i've painted engines with engine enamel and have never had any problems if engine is degreased properly.

painted my block at the weekend with some two pack paint from a mate of mine. hes used it on race engines and never had probs with it. i applied two coats, second after the first was past tacky and drying.
