SVA Fail

I'm putting it here insted of SVA because it's not really a question.
Anyhow, failed my SVA today, which wasn't unexpected but I just didn't know what on. The whole day was a bit of a pig to be honest. The clutch cable nipple started to jump off the clutch arm, the rear diff decided it had a headache and started to make some funny noises whilst doing the speedo test and the sodding immobiliser just packed up for no reason after an hour and a half and so the car wouldn't start again The tester was completely fine with it though and went for a brew whilst I hit the thing but it wouldn't work so we pushed it onto the brake rollers and did them and did the interior projections so as to get as much out of the way as we could.
My failure points, some more worrying than others:
handbrake is "crap" (not performing on the rollers)

footbrake - only 1 front wheel would lock, others ineffective

speedo read okay to 50mph but misfired after getting it up to 6th then coming back down to 5th.

noise failed. Was 102 instead of 99 because the sodding misfire took it just over!

interior projections on ZX9 clock faces and a securing screw head.

Radius fail on steering wheel. Said that the edges of the main steel bit in the middle have to be covered permanently and NOT with just rubber trim

The Luego Velocity scuttle does not quite fit a Locost chassis (despite being told by them it does ) and so the slightly overhanging edge had a radius fail

Exhaust mount radius fail

Front NSF indicator not sticking out enough (easy fix, too much toe out on that wheel caused it)

Front OSF wheel arch not quite covering outside of wheel rim (easy fix)

That's about it, not too bad I don't think for a novice. Most worrying is that the engine was blowing loads of white smoke out. I think it's because I have a very warm garage and the engne sweats so the oil tends to get a lot of mayonnaise in it. I've replaced the head gasket already. Happens on the neighbours car in his adjoining garage too. Not sure whether to just buy a new engine though just in case?
And of course why aren't the brakes working? Standard Sierra master cylinder and calipers.
All in though a good day out and bought myself 6 months more under SVA rules. The tester was fantastic. Very understanding and helpful and let me get the tools out loads, especially on the headlights to set them. Put the car down as a fail rather than a failed to complete so that I would not lose my fee and could just take a £38 retest.
We had a chat about kit cars and he mentioned that the likes of Westfields and Caterhams rarely fail but referred to them as "airfix kits" so a slight recognition for my scratch build.
Looking forward to the retest. I won't be half as nervous next time

Good news is you have 6 months to get it sorted so you should be on the road this summer....

Crash pad for the wheel centre...ask on here as I posted one off to someone for sva ...

bit of tadpole trim or other sort on scuttle

I wrapped my exaust mount in heat wrap..with metal tie to hold it on..Have some bits left over I could post..

Brakes - You need to get sorted for your own safty

Yeah. I don't think it's all too bad but deffo need them brakes doing.
If you don't mind Paul I will have that bit of exhaust wrap. That'll be one thing I can cross off the list

Are you using new pads / discs? That could be the cause of the poor braking (ie if they're just new)...

Yep new pads and disks on the front and new pads on the back but very slightly used disks. Thinking perhaps glazing here?

mistergrumpy - can you post a picture of your scuttle overhang? I too am using a Velocity scuttle, and noticed it is slightly too wide for my ST chassis. I was planning on using some rubber trim stuck to the bottom/edge of the scuttle to keep Mr SVA happy. Any chance I can have a peak at your overhang to see the extent of the fail!?

Shame about the fail but good that youve now got 6 months. I dont think you'll need six months though. The hardest job to do looks like the brakes and it sound as though they just need a bit of use.
Good luck

How long can i resist the temptation to drop a V8 in?

Hmmm. one of my fronts would only lock up as well, tried bleeding them like hell but no difference. Have now done over 200 miles with my indy and them seem to be much better the more i drive it. Handbrake can be adjusted so not to bad. I stuck a piece of perspecs over the clocks to get them passed and just cover all the edges well.

Not to sure about the milky oil.

Twybrow. I'm just off out, I'll have a look at what it is exactly and take a photo later so you can see.

Hard luck! Not a bad fail as they go. At least you know what needs attention now.

The brakes sound like just a case of bedding in. Make sure the pistons are free. Hold the caliper and get somebody else to press the pedal and release. You should see the piston come out and feel it return slightly. Make sure the sliders are clean and lubricate with silicone grease/spray.

were calipers rconned/overhauled? maybe worth checkking again and fitting new seals; also chack pistons for corrosion.

got any tight bends in the lines? check brake lines for any kinking;

did you make the brake pipe ands yourself? check that the ends are mad correcty and hole is good.

is master new? or reconned? again check this is working ok.

... it may be nothing more than bedding the system in - you did drive with left fott on brake and right on accelerate for a bit on the way to theh test?

I made the lines with a double flare and they have flexi lines. TBH I have not had chance to bed the pads and disks. I feel that I can't really drive the thing around the estate in cse someone rings the police and then I'm in real trouble Good call on the MC though thats what I was thinking? I bought it from Ebay.
The tester never introduced himself to me but was called G. Batson. Real nice bloke.

Here's the picture of the scuttle overhang.

Scuttle Overhang
Scuttle Overhang

I'm beginning to wonder if this is what he meant though because he didn't tell me. On the form it just says "contactable edges not radiused to at least 2.5mm @ r/scuttle frame"

I wonder if he means the steel frame that runs under the scuttle. It's just tubing flattened at the ends and welded to the chassis frame.
