Best websites - I need inspiration !
I'm trying to design the layout of our company website and I'm looking for some inspiration.
Could you suggest some links to websites that impress you (and why) ?
Also, what p*sses you off with websites, such as, can't find their phone number etc ?

Thanks in advance.
Contact details, phone number, address, email ect are the biggest things that annoy me. Also flashing images and sounds.
I prefer simplicity.
What kind of product/company is it for?

Industrial heating and air conditioning.
Our logo is red and blue, but I wanted to keep the colours to a minimum and I hate red

Don't put too many things on! Here is one I like. The guy told me that he ignored the web developer's suggestions and went with what the
people in his office liked. I like it a lot.

Like that one, nice and simple not too much going on, however make sure if you are going to do things like when you hover over a link it changes
colour like on that page it actually does, as it doesn't on "click here for feature property".
I always used to find ebuyer had too many links, its a little better now but still confusing

Keep it simple - the thing that really annoys is when you log on and have to watch a video clip or 'infomercial' before you even get to
the home page.
Also, either have new pages opening within the homepage - or have the links and navigation buttons in the same place on each page with a clear
'home' button wherever you go.

things that annoy me with badly designed websites:
- difficulty finding contact details
- poor navigational menus, as well as too many buttons. better to subdivide the contents down into categories if you have loads of stuff to show.
- too many large images which take time to load
- cluttered design. as said before, simplicity is best
- bright, in your face colours, which dont always work together
- links that dont work

I hate it when you are looking for related products on a site, and when you click on them they come up in different formats to each other.....if that
makes sense? Or when you click on a category, and there's no info there - select 'refrigeration packages' on the Currys website to
see what I mean - you think that a company as big as that would carry out some website maintenance from time to time?

Here's one I put together with help of a template. It took me about 2 days to master it. I wanted something simple but effective.

Don't have a "flash" (i.e. animated) intro. It just wastes time getting to what you have really gone to look at.
Don't have sounds and gimmicky clicks
Don't have too many sections on a single page
Don't have too many colours on a single page
Do have a "home" link on every page.
Do have a menu of clickable buttons to all the main pages on all pages, in the same place on every page
Do have contact details, including phone and clickable email address
Do ensure that you spellcheck the whole site, especially parts describing your product or service!

My choice would be to have a straightforward main page - nice simple graphic and/or logo, a little bit of text, and a few links to get to 'who
we are', 'what we can do' and 'how to contact us'.

Three thing that irritate me
Messy, inconsistent, confusing layout, worse if its full of flash.
Music (worse if it's musak)
Not keeping it up to date - things like knowing you provide some product but it's not on the site, conversely still having products on that you
can't supply. Especially irritating if you have a vacancies/recruitment section.

red tet on blue backgound or other hard to read combination
site that force you to change the size of your browser window to see all the stuff = burton power is one example
sites that show too much info on the page

What Pi**es me of about almost all the website I've asked questions on is the email adresses
info@etc and sales@etc who NEVER EVER get back in touch. you usually have to end up phoning for info.
If it looks wrong it probably is wrong.
