New Project....
Hi all,
Just thought I would introduce myself...
I'm dan and live in Peterborough. I have been toying with the idea of building my own car for the last couple of years and have finally decided
to take the plunge!
I will obviously be looking for as much help and advise as possible from you guys (also will contribute to the forum after payday as I have already
read so muc good advise!)
My plan in to....
Take one volvo T5 engine (not sourced yet but on the look out!)
Add one volvo M90 box (I have managed to source this after much searching!)
So that is the only definates of the build....
Now I need to source a dif ideally an LSD any ideas welcome, the gear ratios of the volvo box are:
3.91:1 1st
2.20:1 2nd
1.38:1 3rd
1.00:1 4th
0.70:1 5th
After I have the engine and dif sourced I will start work on a chassis, again looking for recomendations on a good hanling chassis which will be
suited to the above kit. The volbo gearbox is short but quite wide projecting into the direction of the drivers footwell so a chassis with extra width
in this area would be preferable.
Not sure if anyone on this forum have done a similar build but if you have your advise would be much appreciated.
Any info and links to usefull sites / threads would be greatly appreciated.
Oh and this is my worksop where I will be completing the buid:

don't write OT on a new thread title, you're creating the topic, everything you write is very much ON topic!

Nice choice of engine. But.............
Its a bit BIG! You are going to have to have a rather large chassis for it too.
Have you thought about using a smaller engine?

i agree with matt
a nice small light engine would be better
and if by chance you could get such an item with a built in gearbox

Indeed it is a cool engine thogh a little large... but wanted to do something a bit different from the norm, I know there have been a couple of others
built so should hopeflly be able to get some advise off the builders of those. The height of the engine should be able to be dopped a bit by fitting a
drysump. Other than that a big shoe horn may be required!
Have seen larger engines in similar cars so it is possible if not ideal for handling.
Where is the fun in following the trend

a 3.31 volvo diff with 195/50/15 tyres will give you:
30.4 MPH in 1st
54.1 MPH in 2nd
86.2 MPH in 3rd
118.9 MPH in 4th
169.9 MPH in 5th
70 is at 2470 in top
at 6000 RPM, which sounds all right. A 3.62 sierra LSD gives slightly shorter figures of:
27.8 MPH in 1st
49.4 MPH in 2nd
78.8 MPH in 3rd
108.8 MPH in 4th
155.4 MPH in 5th
70 is at 2700 in top

Thanks very much was just about to knock up an excel spread sheet to work that out.... saves me the effort
Having said that I think I might start to make one with as many calculations as I can think of that are needed when building a car so it may be added
to the site for other users to download and use

yeah I am, I do have a thread, but its not up here yet as theres not a huge amount to see!
Deciding to use a mazda mx5 donor, BMW gearbox, volvo engine etc didnt simplify things!

Not supprising given the engine / turbo size combinaion, still lots of power out of 2.5 litres! I will be happy with a non laggy ~300HP out of mine
